It was among the lonely sounds of Big Buck Hunter and a pool table that had been loved too much that you could find White Chocolate & the Cigarettes yesterday evening at a bar appropriately named Plan B. Not to say it’s not a quality bar, it’s a fine venue, but there’s something about whiskey, punk rock, and cigarettes that doesn’t mix naturally with a Tuesday night.
White Chocolate & the Cigarettes, if you can get past their absurd name, is a pretty quality garage-punk-blues band. When lead singer Michael Whitbylife was asked if he would agree that his guitar playing has reminiscence of surf rock at times he stated; “I don’t agree, but I understand.”
Whitbylife had this to say about his music; “I am completely prepared to be the best band of all time, I just need everyone to be as drunk as I am when I play.”
A fan referred to the band as “angry soul music”. It’s always difficult to pigeonhole bands into their genres, but that seems like a pretty accurate reading. Doing a cover like Sunny Afternoon by The Kinks, it is sure that this band will either make you cry or burst your eardrum.
White Chocolate & the Cigarettes is a two piece band, along the lines of The White Stripes, with Whitbylife on vocals and guitar, and long-haired Chase Spross on drums (like Meg White). They plan to tour the west coast and surrounding areas this summer from Austin to Seattle, so keep an eye out for ‘em.
