This book is shocking, stunning and a chronicles of stunning demonically detailed drawings. If angels were real physical beings, how would their wings be attached? That is the question that artist and debut novelist E. B. Hudspeth once asked himself when working on a sculpture. What began as anatomical research on an angel’s wings led Hudspeth to the creation of the unparalleled novel The Resurrectionist: The Lost Work of Dr. Spencer Black (Quirk Books, $24.95).
A cross between Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Gray’s Anatomy, The Resurrectionist offers two incredible books in one.
The first book is a fictional biography of Dr. Spencer Black, beginning with his humble childhood through his medical training, his travels with carnivals, and the mysterious disappearance at the end of his life. The son of a Boston “resurrectionist” (aka grave robber), Black spent his childhood exhuming corpses for medical research. After the sudden death of his father, he decided to pursue a degree in medicine. In 1870, Black was at the top of his medical career at Philadelphia’s esteemed Academy of Medicine, where he developed an unconventional hypothesis: What if the world’s most celebrated mythological beasts—dragons, mermaids, minotaurs, and satyrs—were in fact the evolutionary ancestors of humankind?
The second book is Black’s magnum opus: The Codex Extinct Animalia, an anatomical reference manual of mythological beasts, all rendered in meticulously detailed anatomical illustrations. In 1908, Black arranged for the publication of the book, but only six copies were printed before he withdrew the project and vanished. No one knows why Black halted printing the book, and his disappearance remains a mystery. What is known can be presumed from the images, which reveal the work of a madman.
