Most of you are probably familiar with Scimecca's Italian Sausages you see at your local grocer. Some of you may not know that those sausages started out at one local Italian grocer on Independence Ave. Twenty plus years ago that grocery store filled the noses of it’s shoppers with smells of garlic, olive oil, dried meats and sliced imported cheeses. It was heaven. The grocery store is long gone, replaced with an equally olfactory stunning Asian grocer.
Walking into Sorella's sandwich shop at 7 N. Missouri St in downtown Liberty Missouri is like going back in time and walking through the doors of Scimecca's. Into a place seeped in olive oil, rubbed in garlic, and shaken in Parmesan. Sorella's is primarily a sandwich shop and hanging outside is a swinging wooden sign of a Boars Head, advertising the top notch ingredients they serve on their delicious hoagie rolls. Enter into the cozy little shop and you are greeted with a counter displaying gorgeous olive, pasta, and potato salads you can choose as one of your sides. On the menu board are written your choices for sandwiches. They offer the classic Muffaletta, served hot with a delightful green olive spread and bubbling with provolone. Though you may like to think you only need to order a half, don’t sell yourself short. You will be left wanting and wishing you would have just ordered the whole and still had half a sandwich more of those exquisite cheesy meaty mouthfuls. Also offered is an extremely satisfying Reuben, a meatball sub, a spicy Pastrami or several other classic combos. Vegetarians need not distress; you too can treat your senses to the celebratory experience of Sorella's. For you they offer a veggie sandwich with roasted veggies, black olive spread, and Havarti cheese all dressed in balsamic dressing. There are also, as I mentioned several side salads, and plain penne in marinara. To complete your lunch you can order from a selection of fresh baked cookies or brownies. If you do not delight in decadence, do not order the brownie.
If you are looking for a nice Italian meal of spaghetti and meatballs with a glass of Chianti, Sorella's is open until 8 PM on Thursday and Fridays. They serve their delicious pasta and meatballs, and if you go on Fridays you can treat yourself to traditional lasagna. However you might want to make it an early dinner because they frequently sell out before 7.
Sorella's is out of plain view and you may need to make use of your GPS, or even god forbid, ask a passerby which street to turn on up ahead, but it is well worth it. It is fast, very affordable (especially if you force yourself to share a whole sandwich with a lunch date) and something you will have good dreams about later on in the night.
