Erin Tierney leaves her abusive and alcoholic husband, police officer Kevin Tierney, under disguise with the assistance of an elderly neighbor and moves to the small town of Southport, North Carolina, where she befriends her neighbor, Jo, and adopts the identity of "Katie Feldman". She also meets Alex Wheatley, the manager of a local convenient store, and his children, Lexi and Josh. Alex's previous wife died of cancer, and he has always kept letters written by her, to be given to their children in important moments of their lives.
With Jo's encouragement, Katie and Alex begin a romantic relationship. Lexi immediately accepts Katie, while Josh is initially resistant, believing Katie to be his mother's replacement, but eventually accepts her as well. Meanwhile, Kevin continues to search for Katie using his authority as a police officer, and forges reports that she is a wanted murderer. Upon seeing her picture in the police station, Alex confronts Katie, who reveals her true identity and past to him. Alex tells her that they can go to the police for help and she just smiles. She then tells Alex that Kevin is the police and that he will find her, he always does. Alex promises to protect her. Kevin is brought into the chief's office and is suspended for abusing power and authority as well as misusing police resources. He tells his boss that he only wanted her back. The chief just shakes his head disgustingly. After breaking into the old lady's home and listening to her answering machine while she is sleeping, Kevin finds out where Katie is staying. Kevin then heads to Southport to retrieve what is his.
During the Fourth of July, Kevin breaks into Alex's house while he and Josh are away shooting fireworks. He then attacks Katie while Lexi is sleeping on the couch. Katie talks to Kevin and asks him to leave and she then takes Lexi upstairs so that she can safely watch the fireworks and be out of harms way. Kevin returns and douses the store with gasoline and attempts to set it on fire. She talks him out of it and tosses him into the lake. Meanwhile, the fireworks spark the gasoline doused all over the store and it catches fire. Alex rescues Lexi while Katie fights with Kevin. They roll around on the ground and Kevin prepares to shoot Katie. However, she is able to dodge him and the bullet hits him. He accidentally commits suicide and the ambulance takes his body away in a body bag. http:www.youtube.com/safehaven
The next day, Alex retrieves his dead wife's letters from the fire and gives Katie the one that his wife had written "For Her"--the woman that Alex would fall in love with. Katie is surprised to learn that Alex's wife was Jo, and that she had been interacting with Jo's spirit all of this time. The book was much more detailed and precise but the movie was still very well done. Safe Haven is a total chick flick. So go ahead and take the girls out for a girls night out and enjoy the film. This movie critic gives it a 4 star review. Don't forget the soda and popcorn.
