"Macbeth," based on the play by Shakespeare, was produced in 1961 and it was a TV movie with Sean Connery as the lead character, Macbeth. It's not entirely a visually striking film but it does have that eerie atmosphere that makes the movie. It's gloomy which is perfect for the plot of the movie. "Macbeth," is an eerie film, a film about murder, witches, and how power corrupts a person. Still to this day there are leaders that will kill for power as it was in the Medieval world. But we must remember that Macbeth is not the only accomplice, Lady Macbeth, she also hungers for power and 'helps' her husband obtain that power by using her words of crazed wisdom.
So this production in particular, for being not a cinematic film isn't bad. Connery, has the perfect voice you could say for Shakespeare. He is booming, almost a little too confident. The scene where Macbeth sees Banquo ghost is not badly acted. While Connery, was great there was just one problem, he had enough emotion but his descent in madness just felt like it wasn't well developed. He does show madness yes in some scenes but it felt like something was missing. There is no doubt though that his performance isn't memorable. Lady Macbeth, I felt like she didn't get to show everything that the play gives has her as. Really, the only one you remember in the film is Connery which that sort of hinders the movie. I like the actress, Zoe Caldwell, who played Lady Macbeth but I don't think that this TV production gave her a chance to show her whole capabilities or really any of the characters.
Overall, this isn't a bad TV movie and if you get the chance to see it, you should. For it's budget and everything, it's a good. Just the problem was the characters didn't get their chance to develop as well as the Play as the characters. Connery though with his acting ability in the film, saves it! So the TV movie is a 3 out of 5 star movie.
