One listen to Mangoseed and you'll be inspired and hooked. A dynamically charged group centered on a funky, reggae vibe with thought-provoking messages, Mangoseed's latest release, Basquiat, is a musical melting pot. Opening with "Lioness," the band's lead vocalist, Nicholai La Barrie takes to the microphone along with Karlos Coleman, Richard Hardy, and Sam Campbell to create an immediate and in your face sound that is distinctive and catchy. The song is about a woman who has the qualities of a lion, ferocious but breathtaking to look at and know. With "Brix-tone," Mangoseed take their cue from Red Hot Chili Peppers in incorporating a hip-hop vibe around the musically tinged lyrics. One key element among many that distinguishes Mangoseed from other bands are the striking guitars that provide an in-depth edginess.

On "I Shoot My Friends," infuse an interesting vibe a la Bob Marley with a story similar to "I Shot The Sheriff," whereas "She Is All" tones the upbeat melodies down with a hauntingly tune that is quite infectious and poetic. "This Life," will undoubtedly become a favorite among listeners. La Barrie's vocals fit both the sounds that encompass the songs and the lyrics he recites. The album's finale, "Army of One" is full of funky originality and creativity that furthers Mangoseed's fascinating take on music.

Mangoseed adds that "the album is inspired by the work and spirit of Jean- Michel Basquiat. His use of old and new, his focus on suggestive dichotomies and rebellious ability to use any influence in his work. In Mangoseed terms that means that we have pulled form all the genres that we love, all the artists and bands that have inspired us and lead us to create music and made unique homage to them, so Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wu-Tang clan, the Watts poets and Bjork meet in the same track and hopefully it becomes an homage to all of them but also taking the inspiration form those artists and many more to create our own idea our own flavor." A South London band, Mangoseed was formed from an assortment of jam sessions, live gigs and the like. A commanding blend of energetic elevated thought, Mangoseed is one band whose music is unmistakably unique.

Final Grade: A
