A pie home run at Simplethings

Baseball season may just be underway, but my search to find a pie that would “wow” me was coming to an end.  In a last attempt to find a piece of memorable pie in Los Angeles, I headed over to a W. 3rd Street sandwich and pie shop called Simplethings.  Surrounded by more well-known and/or trendy restaurants, Simplethings looked a bit like a David in a land of Goliaths.  After sampling an array of Simplethings pies, it’s safe to say that this "David" is again the winner.

The first thing you see when you walk in the door is the pie case.  On the case is a “pie chart” to tell you what flavors are available that day.  You can find a more extensive “pie chart” on the Simplethings website.  The pies come in 3 sizes: “Cutie Pies” (a mini three bite pie), “Simple Pies” (big enough for two people to share) or “Big Pies” (a whole size pie).

“Cutie Pies” are great because they can be that little bit of sweet you crave at the end of a meal or you can get a few of them and sample the different flavors without spending a fortune. The cherry pie was a perfect combination of sweet and tart with a moist flakey crust.  The Mississippi Mud came warmed up and was topped with a dollop of homemade marshmallow. The Salted Caramel seemed to be the biggest seller that day, tasting like a salty, caramel truffle on top of a buttery graham cracker crust.
