A New Dawn Rising by Michael Joseph is a crime thriller/mystery that provides a beginning for a possible series by the author. The protagonist is a man named Sam, a burned-out former cop with nightmares about a tragic personal loss. The character development in the story happens very quickly, in fact, before the story really takes off. This leaves the reader a bit lost in places. The story is a good one with all the elements to be entertaining. Sam finds himself working for a man who has been receiving death threats and when he is killed in a fire at his business, Sam becomes the murder suspect. He realizes that he must find the real killer in order to clear himself. However, there are those who want to stop his investigation for obvious reasons.
There is a fairly long cast of characters which makes the reader pay attention just to keep track of the names. The author tends to change point of view in the early chapters of the book which is an additional challenge to the reader. Although the ending is predictable, the author does succeed in wrapping up the rather twisty plot. Readers should enjoy the plot twists, the fast pace, and likable characters.
A New Dawn Rising is the debut novel for Michael Joseph, and is a solid effort. If practice truly makes perfect, expect good things from Mr. Joseph.
