The new movie Her takes place in the “slight future” and it’s not hard to imagine some of the things in this film becoming a reality soon. There are no flying cars or anything like that. There’s a much more realistic society depicted here. A new computer operating system is manufactured which not only has a voice (much like the current “Siri” feature on many cell phones) but also a personality of its own.

Joaquin Phoenix plays a somewhat lonely man who is separated from his wife who is trying to divorce him. He still thinks of her often though. So he decides to purchase this new operating system and is amazed to see how it develops such a humanlike personality when it talks to him. It does help him with things like organizing his hard drive and filtering emails, but it also becomes his main companion that he can speak to about anything he wants.

Scarlett Johansson provides the voice for the operating system, which becomes his girlfriend, and injects just the type of personality that would make a lonely guy like this create such an odd relationship. He will never see his girlfriend or feel his girlfriend; all they can do is talk. But that’s all that he really needs. Soon enough, you begin to see many other people walking around talking to their operating systems and entering relationships with them as well. It’s not hard to imagine this becoming a reality in the near future. There are already many long-distance relationships that people are in with people they’ve “met” online but have never physically met and maybe never will. If you’ve ever watched the show Catfish, that’s enough evidence to show how common these situations are which consist of just talking on the phone and nothing more.

This is a film that really makes you ponder about what our future will be like, and what changes in our society could eventually become the norm. We already have technology that may have seemed crazy 20 years ago, so who knows what ideas which may seem preposterous could be accepted not long from now. Her is a very unique film and certainly worth seeing if you’re looking for something different from anything else out there. Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson provide just the right chemistry to make such a strange relationship work onscreen and it shouldn’t be missed.
