The last weekly showcase at Zest Kitchen and Bar, 275 South 200 West is hosted by Tom Bennett and Brandon Isbell of Sweet Salt Records, and has contributed many new artists to the Wednesday evening scene in downtown Salt Lake City. Last evening, it was the turn of the lovely Kalli Georgellis to open. Her clear voice and a great selection of songs was the first of several performances. Kalli has a wide range of songs and has previously played at Zest, and at Studio #5Alive.
She was followed by the talented Mark Engel, whose one man band provided a stimulating set to close the first hour. His performances are always amazing, sometimes he has drums, tambourine and guitar all playing at once and you can only wonder how he manages to sing tongue-twisting songs at the same time.
Chanda Charmayne, the next slated artist to sing, was accompanied by Josh Alfaro, who preceded her with a couple of solos. Her powerful set delighted the enthused audience in this small but intimate venue. Chanda is both tall and elegant, and an accomplished guitarist with numerous songs. She has also performed at other downtown locations.
After Chanda's set, Larry Moreland, of Bird In The Trees, presented a number of songs, introducing Vernon Twede later on - another member of Bird In The Trees, whose lead vocals are usually provided by Katia Racine, but was not performing at this show.
Finally, Tom Bennett closed out the showcase with several of his own songs, which were well received. He has recently completed a tour to the midwest and south, all the way to his Georgia roots, and has released his first album, "The Man who Shook the Trail of the Devil's Hounds" earlier this year.
