Howdy campers. We need to drink more water, period. So, does this mean we should be buying more water bottles? Many outdoor companies, including Camelbak surprisingly, say that I should be buying more bottles; you have only to look at their website. But wait, didn’t they start the whole “better than a bottle” hydration bladder thing? Why on earth would they want to be selling me bottles now? Is there something that they know that I don’t? I think I have found the very something that Camelbak would prefer I didn’t share with you-GEIGERRIG hydration packs.
GEIGERRIG is a new company that is revolutionizing the hydration pack market, and people all over the globe are taking notice in a big way! In its first year of production, the GEIGERRIG has swept the outdoor gear awards. It has won the2011 OR In-New-Vation award as well as the as well as the accessory of the year award at the Outdoor Trade Show in the UK. Other awards and expert reviews from Backpacker.com, Adventure World and Camping Life magazines have are making declarations like “Bottom line, the best hydration system I’ve found”- Dan Larson, Writer, Backpacker.com. And, I'm sure as time goes on the list will get longer and longer.
WHY? Why is the GEIGERRIG being put forward as this year’s “can’t be without piece of gear? Shouldn’t that go to some $600 dollar jacket, or a $1000 sleeping bag that kept testers dry and refreshed in the midst of hurricane Catrina-like conditions??
Absolutely not. I now have one of these new GEIGERRIG hydration systems, and I’ve personally put it through the paces. And when you’re done reading this, you’ll know why Camelbak, the original hydration pack company, is no longer pushing “better than a bottle” and has decided to sell water bottles instead. In fact, you’re going to feel like braving something as fierce as a stern wife/husband to get one of these new GEIGERRIG packs. Before I start to run down why, it would be very helpful to watch this short clip.
Consider these points as a play a little devil’s advocate:
· I’m not paying $300 for some jumped up water bladder. NO, no you’re not. The GEIGERRIG costs no more than any comparable sized Hydration system. And, what’s more, I can even show you how to get one for FREE.
· No more need to suck in order to access the water in your hydration system! I would be sold by this point alone, but let me explain. The GEIGERRIG has two main chambers. One for water, and a second that fills with air via one of the cool bulbs they use to take your blood pressure. So this is a pressurized system. As a result, on average people drank 50% more water because it was easy.
· But won’t that just make bubbles? Oh no my adept and mindful reader. As I mentioned in the first point the air bladder is piggy-backed onto the water chamber. So, as the air is added, the air bladder pushes on the fluid bladder. This ingenious chamber separation means pressurized water with no bubbles.
But I’m an ultra-lighter; I don’t have room in my pack for an air bladder the size of a birthday balloon! Fear not my U.L. friend. When the air bladder expands, it’s simply going to press against whatever gear you have next to it. If that leaves very little space that’s even better, less pumping for you.
· I hate breaking out the filter at every streamside or waterhole. This is where the GEIGERRIG goes from extraordinary to ultra-extraordinary. Fill the water bladder at any water source you find. Then you simply snap in the in line accessory filter, and you’re covered from Crypto, Giardia, and Bacteria for 50 gallons.
· All of the points above may not yet have been considered by hydration pack users, but I know of one point which certainly has… HYDRATION BLADDERS ARE HARD TO CLEAN. It’s a fact, and we’ve all tangled with it. This is why so many people buy a new hydration bladder every year or stop using their hydration pack all together. In a single use they can go from clean and safe to nasty, gross disasters that we are advised to clean with a poison - bleach. Come on! There truly must be a better way; and finally there is. You have never truly “cleaned” your hydro because it simply hasn’t been possible…till now. The GEIGERRIG can be completely turned inside out, and washed on the top rack of your dishwasher [germophobes like me rejoice, we are free!] That, in my opinion, is a grand slam!
For the sake of brevity, I’m going to include a list of the many amazing things only the Geigerrig system can offer: Spray water to drink, stay cool, wash items (like cuts, can you believe the Army protocol till now was take a mouthful and spit it onto your friends wound!!). And what about sharing with friends, or even Fido. Easy care, clean water from any source, constant pressure, and a pressurizing system that will actually help stabilize your load.
Friends, I know I like to add a little humor to my writing, but I can say with complete honesty that the GEIGERRIG which comes in many sizes needs to be an outdoor gear upgrade this year. Humans need water for so many things. Hydration obviously occupies our first need, but for many other reasons. Add to that the number of people who simply roll up their Hydro and think it’s ready for next year. I’ve actually heard people say “no, I ran a little bleach through it with the water”. Friends, bleach takes from 30-60 minutes to kill waterborne bacteria, it just isn’t enough, nor is it safe to drink. Get the GEIGERRIG that fits you best.
