A Cozy Night at the Kitty Cat Klub with the Painted Saints

Painted Saints played this past Saturday night at the Kitty Cat Klub.  Coming from Denver, they brought what had to be multiple vehicles of instruments and a sound they describe as "a gutter blues/spaghetti western-heroin klezmer-chamber country-sad bastard sort of sound."

That's quite a description to live up to, but the Painted Saints stepped up to it nicely.  After a somewhat slow start, the group veered from a traditional Hebrew song to a lovely, almost grimy rock song called "Motorcycle" to a bouncy, Americana critique of our modern lifestyle (which was particularly well-written and fun).

They seemed to struggle with sound issues for much of the set, but they didn't let any frustration they may have felt bleed into the music.  It was, overall, a fairly upbeat set - even when the words belied the tone of the music - that slowed down as it eased the audience back into the late night streets.

Towards the end, there were even dancers on the floor - it may have been a Saturday night, but it was rather late regardless - so I was quite impressed.

All in all, the Painted Saints hit many right notes, even when the sound was a little sour.  It was a great way to end a Saturday night.
