I decided it was time for another short fiction review and I chose another short story that is available for free from Smashwords. This short story is “A Cop’s Infection” by N.F. David.
The world is on the verge of being overrun by those who are infected by a strange virus that can cause several different conditions. The police have largely turned into a force to kill those infected by the virus with the rest of society turning a blind eye. Kyle and Bradley are two such cops but they are not happy partners. Kyle is in an unhappy marriage in which his wife is cheating on him. Even worse, she is cheating on him with his partner, Bradley. Now Kyle has decided that Bradley must die and the infected may just give him the perfect scapegoat to blame a murder on.
In “A Cop’s Infection,” N.F. David crafts a world that is intriguing. The virus affects those infected in several different ways so that the world resembles that of a zombie apocalypse but the infected are not just simple zombies. Some have the traits of a traditional zombie yet others are very different. This adds an element to the story that makes it original and intriguing. Short stories can be powerful due to their brevity which allows the reader to fill in many of the gaps but this story just fell a little short of this to me. I was intrigued by the setup of the story yet the story lacked any real payoff. I would like to see David return to this world in the future and flesh it out but this story put too much of the focus on Kyle and Bradley and the tension between them while glossing over the more interesting aspects of this plague ravished world. While “A Cop’s Infection” provided a brief diversion, it left me wanting too much for what could have been rather than thinking on what the story was about.
