The audio at the Times Union Center for the Performing Arts was marvelous for the one night showing of “A Chorus Line”. Sitting for the two-hour musical (no intermission) was interesting for those who may have had to make a ‘potty break’. It was recommended to ‘go’ before the show. And now, on with the review.
The dialogue among the Dancers and the Director was epic. Everyone had a story to tell about their life away from dancing. The Director wanted to get to know the person and not just the dancer. The harmony on the song “At the Ballet” was totally on pitch and the mirrored wall with lighting, gave such depth to the song. Kudos to Brook, Bonnie & Bronwyn – the three harmonizing B’s (each actors last name begins with a ‘B’).
Unlike another musical that came to JAX, this show depicted the lives of some of the dancers and one could empathize with each dancer candidate. Later the Director wanted to know what some of the dancers would do if they couldn’t dance. The reactions were very interesting.
“A Chorus Line” is all about ‘The Dance’. Everything else is icing – especially The Music and the Mirrors. The song “What I Did for Love” was amazingly presented and the finale of “One” was very well implemented. The costumes are fabulous and the ‘quick-change’ of the troupe was energetically and magically executed at the end. Simply entertaining!
