A Charlottesville favorite, Revolutionary Soup specializes in vegetarian soups

Revolutionary Soup specializes in vegetarian and vegan meals and soups

As their placard states, Revolutionary Soup specializes in soups, salads, sandwiches, fine wine and beer. The little hole-in-the-wall restaurant that began on 2rd street off of the Charlottesville Downtown Pedestrian Mall is a local favorite, and now, also has a second location on The Corner. According to their website, “sustainably raised local food” makes their “farm to table” meals delicious and healthy.

Typical soups at Revolutionary Soup:

  • Spicy Senegalese Peanut Tofu
  • Tomato Basil Bisque
  • Classic Miso
  • Creamy Rosemary Potato
  • Local Shitake and Asparagus
  • Caribbean Sweet Potato
  • Lamb Curry
  • Manhattan Clam Chowder
  • White Bean and Ham

Both locations of Revolutionary Soup open daily at 9:00 a.m. to serve breakfast, Monday through Saturday. Breakfast is only served for two hours before the soup and sandwich main menu service begins. The two breakfast options, both under $10, are: 1) two eggs, bacon, toast and grits, and 2) grilled ham and Swiss cheese topped with fried egg and béchamel.

At Revolutionary Soup, the lunch and dinner menu are the same, starting at 11:00 a.m., each day, ending at 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday but staying open until 9:00 p.m., on Fridays and Saturdays. The menus at Revolutionary Soup feature several vegan and gluten-free meal options, including some or all of these daily homemade soups: Spicy Senegalese Peanut Tofu, Tomato Basil Bisque, Classic Miso, Creamy Rosemary Potato, Local Shitake and Asparagus, and Caribbean Sweet Potato. But Revolutionary Soup also caters to meat lovers with options like Lamb Curry, Manhattan clam chowder and White Bean and Ham. Soups come in three sizes (8, 12 or 16 ounces) ranging in price from $4 to $7.

Nineteen different sandwich or wrap combinations ($5-$8) make the lunch menu at Revolutionary Soup, and of those, nine are vegan or vegetarian. Garlic Garden Club, Vegetarian Quesadillas, Mozzarella and Pesto, and even Grilled Tofu are just a few healthy options, with Chicken, Ham and Brie, Tuna, and BLT rounding out the menu with meat options.

Salads at Revolutionary Soup are not just lettuce; although standards like Caesar and House Salad, as well as the spinach, blue cheese, candied walnuts and cranberries are available. Revolutionary Soup also offers more exciting combination salads like feta, artichoke hearts and roasted red peppers; or shrimp, avocado, roasted peppers and boiled egg. Revolutionary Soup serves their salads in full or half portions, ranging from $4-$8.

The menu at Revolutionary Soup changes frequently but the food remains the same: locally sourced, with nearly a dozen daily different soup options. Revolutionary Soup can get crowded, especially during dinner at Friday’s After Five, Saturday breakfast and lunch during the seasonal Farmer’s Market; and most business days during the lunch rush.

Revolutionary Soup may not be the top choice for a romantic meal or a relaxed evening event, but if great locally sourced healthy foods are important, Revolutionary Soup will satisfy every meal, no matter what the occasion.
