’39 Steps’ of fabulous fun at La Mirada

Alfred Hitchcock’s film The 39 Steps (based on the John Buchan spy novel) became an iconic thriller after its release in 1935. Adapted by Patrick Barlow from both the novel and the film, a delightful stage version of The 39 Steps, which opened January 21, 2012, offers fabulous fun at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts.

Directed brilliantly by Jessica Kubzansky the show features Andrew Borba as the bored yet charming playboy, Richard Hannay, who gets sucked out of his ennui and into a vortex of intrigue. Dana Green is stunning and versatile in three roles as Annabella Schmidt, Pamela and Margaret. David McBean and Matt Walker complete the cast in tour de force performances as a kaleidoscope of colorful characters.

True to the story (for the most part), but adding a healthy helping of zany humor the show contains references to “other” films sure to please Hitchcock aficionados.

Three cheers for Set and Costume Designer Peter McKintosh who seamlessly took the cast from Hannay’s apartment in London to an Edinbugh train and station, the Forth Bridge, the Scottish moors and the Al-na-Shelach. And that's just in the first act! His clever scene on the train takes the audience along for the ride. The second act features a full stage shadow puppet chase across the hills; watch closely for the inventive Hitchcock cameo.

Kaitlin McCoy’s wigs also deserve accolades for their integral contribution to the show.

Borba performance was spot on and strong throughout. Green's comic timing was perfect.

Troubadour Theater Company founder Walker was in his element with the lighting quick costume changes and shifts from character to character and McBean was every bit as deft. Highlights include their portrayal of the “spies,” and their turn as the husband and wife innkeepers.

Audiences are not likely to find a more entertaining play current onstage in the Southland. Go!
