Toyota wanted to create a new Corolla that people actually want to buy as opposed to one they think they should buy for practical reasons. So will the new Corolla instill passion in its potential buyers? Let's find out!
In terms of looks, the styling is pretty bold for a mainstream sedan. Toyota is going after a younger buyer and I think they'll be successful with the all new exterior. The Corolla S is even more aggressive with a piano black grille to boot!
The interior is based on what Toyota calls “Iconic Dynamism”which basically means that like the exterior, they want to appeal to a younger more tech savvy car buyer. It does bring impressive tech to the table with USB 2,0, blue-tooth and voice recognition standard in all Corollas.
Safety is also important for Toyota. The Corolla has 8 airbags and traction control.
Powering the Corolla is a 1.8 liter 4 cylinder which produces 132 horsepower and 128 lb. ft. of torque. The Eco LE has 140 hp. That's good for a 0-60 time of 10.8 seconds for the 4 speed auto, 9.3 seconds for the 6 speed manual, and 9.8 seconds for the LE Eco.
The Corolla S will get to 60 in 9.3 seconds with a 6 speed manual and 9.9 seconds with the CVT transmission. You can equip the Corolla with a 4 speed automatic, 6 speed manual, or a CVT transmission. Which increases mpg by at least 3.
Fuel economy is rated at 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. You can expect 28 mpg overall.
The 2014 is a larger car with the wheelbase 3.9" longer and the total length increased by 3.3 inches". It is also .4 inches lower, which will lower the center of gravity and therefore improve handling. Rear seat leg room has increased a staggering 5.1"!
The 2014 Corolla starts at $16,800 and goes up to $19,000. The LE starts at $18,300 and the LE Eco starts at $18,700.
The CVT transmission has been designed to feel like a 7 speed 19,000. It also helps with engine braking and sport shifting with higher revs when you really push it. It feels more natural while you are driving, and it's quite impressive, even adding 3 mpg overall.
