The 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4x4 - equipped with the X Package - is all the vehicle a family needs for them to live a robust and energetic lifestyle complete with limitless all-season off-road capability plus all of the around town convenience they would want.

We recently got our hands on a brand new 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon X 4x4 for a week of driving and evaluation - as if it needs evaluation - considering Jeep is the iconic patriarch of off-road sport utility vehicles (SUV).

Right up front, we need to confess that we are "closet" Jeep fans - especially when it comes to the top-of-the-line Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon X 4x4 - and this particular Wrangler came exactly how we would order it if we were buying one.

Jeep aficionados will argue that the only true off-road SUV is the Jeep Wrangler which gets its DNA from the rough and tumble world of off-road adventuring while other - said to be - 'off-road capable' SUV vehicles in the segment get their DNA more from the minivan world.

Our 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon X 4x4 - in Granite Crystal Metallic Clear Coat with Black interior - came very well equipped at a base price of $34,695.

As we said, this one came to us pretty much exactly as we might have ordered it to give us a complete SUV that is a top performer off-road and is also pretty darn credible around town and on the highway.

The Jeep Wrangler series all come with the solid performing, award winning Pentastar VVT 3.6L DOHC V6 power plant that kicks out 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on Wrangler.

The first option that came on our test Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon was the W5A580 five-speed automatic transmission ($1,295) with Adaptive Range Select (ERS) and driver-interactive manual control with electronically modulated torque converter clutch.

For the multi-purpose family user, this transmission (mated to the 3.6L V6) gets the job done - without any apologies for not being a manual shift - getting 16/20 mpg City/Highway fuel economy and an expected average of 18 mpg.

The Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon comes with the top mounted NV241OR Rock-Trac part-time transfer case that offers 2WD High, 4WD High, Neutral and 4WD Low power transfer to the wheels through a 3.73 rear end (4.10 is optional). Wrangler Rubicon Axles are the Dana 44 with Tru-Lok electronic locking both front and rear.

The Rubicon comes standard with 17.5-inch painted and polished cast aluminum wheels clad with BF Goodrich Mud Terrain LT255/75/R17 on/off-road tires to insure all that 4x4 power gets solidly on the trail (or rock face) as well as smoothly on the highway.

With these tires and wheels, the key off-road clearance numbers are Approach Angle - 44 degrees, Breakover Angle - 20.8 degrees and Departure Angle - 40.5 degrees. Trail clearance heights are 10.5 inches front axle and 10.1-inches rear.

The Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon comes packed with the following (a rather long list) standard features or equipment.

Our 2014 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon X 4x4 had also added several other packages or options that we would like as if we had ordered it for us.

Rubicon X Package: Iincludes wheels painted satin black with polished faces, front and rear winch-ready steel off-road bumpers with removable end caps, Power Dome hood, red tow hooks, Mopar rock rails tail lamp guards, fuel filler door and slush mats, red "Rubicon" hood decals, heated black leather seats with accent stitching, premium Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) and silver interior accents, red "Trail Rated" badges - $4,100.

Freedom Top: 3-piece Hard Top with storage bag, rear window defroster and wiper /washer - $595. (Note our test Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon X also had the soft top included. It is listed as 'delete' item)

Uconnect 430N (navigation) system: Has HD radio, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, 40 GB hard drive, GPS Navigation and 6.5-inch Touch Screen Display - $1,095.

Remote Start System -$495.

Trail Kit: With Clevis D-rings, tow straps, gloves and storage bag - was no charge.

The total price for this very complete and easily comfortable SUV for a robust multi-purpose oriented family was $43,270 - delivered.

Oh yes, since you asked, the 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited X 4x4 tows and hauls too. It has a tow capacity of 3,500 pounds (when equipped with the optional to package) and a payload of 900 pounds.
