If you’re in the market for a midsize sedan that’s reliable, not too expensive and gets outstanding fuel economy, the Honda Accord Hybrid is pretty much a no-brainer choice.
Appearance-wise, it is practically indistinguishable from the regular Accord, save for some different headlights, blue trim on the grille and different wheels.
And on the inside, you get all that the regular Accord has come to be known for: a comfortable, spacious cabin, a dashboard with easy to find and use controls and good overall fit and finish.
The Accord Hybrid, which made its debut last year, is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that make an impressive 196 horsepower. The transmission is an electronic continuously variable unit.
The Accord Hybrid’s power is substantial – you’ll have no problem merging onto a busy freeway or passing a tractor trailer.
There are three driving modes from which to choose: Hybrid, EV (which relies solely on electricity until the battery wears out) or Engine.
The Accord Hybrid’s outstanding fuel economy numbers check in at 50 mpg city, 45 highway. Who knew you could do so well with gas mileage in a car of this size?
For safety, the Accord Hybrid has a backup camera as standard equipment along with the terrific LaneWatch system that Honda introduced recently. With that feature, when you put on your turn signal to make a right turn, the center screen gives you a rear-facing view of the right lane, nearly eliminating the blind spot in that area.
The Accord Hybrid starts at close to $31,000 and ranges to about $35,000.
This is one of the best values among cars, hybrid or non, on the market today.
