Don’t let the 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i’s long-ish moniker, a mix of upper and lower cased letters and numbers, get your pantaloons in a knot, expend your brain power instead, on all that the vehicle could offer. Just picture yourself as one of those reality show spendthrifts and allow yourself to luxuriate in all that is the X5 Bimmer luxury crossover.

At first glance, you’ll notice that the X5’s sheet metal has been trimmed (by about 200 pounds) but not changed too much from its previous design. But peep again, and you’ll see that the X5’s grille is bigger with really sleek integrated headlights, a nice sinister-like touch. There are also gills in the front bumper and again, behind the wheel arches and these add not only a sporty look but actually serve a purpose to reduce drag and decrease fuel consumption. The SUV’s roofline is a smidge more tapered and overall, the body hasn’t been radically altered but it has been sculpted enough to make it more of a head-turner.

The BMW X5’s nicely appointed innards will make you believe you’re on your way to reality show ultimate bitchery. The up to 7-seater’s cabin is sensibly and elegantly appointed, solid construction, premium materials and noteworthy workmanship through and through from its seating to the dash and beyond. And speaking of seating, the X5’s 10-way heated power front seats offer a comfy, fits-all-body-types feel and are solidly bolstered which means superior lumbar support for practically every back ailment. However, the rear seats, which offer the same level of tush/back comfort, are a bit too low to the floor, so vertically challenged folks might find themselves staring more at their knees than they’d like to. The X5’s optional third-row seating, will realistically only comfortably accommodate the pint-sized set, or a mother-in-law, you are not too particularly fond of in the least bit.

As far as gizmos, the X5 has got ‘ em and then some. The famed iDrive infotainment system has been kicked up a notch to include a touchpad controller, which makes using it easier than the previous rotary knob.

Giving the BMW X5 some gas, is a gas, as far as performance, as it does not get any better than this. Acceleration, overall handling, the marks are off the chart; the X5 is sports-injected ride all the way. If you’re looking for a cushier, more sedate ride feel, this ain’t it. The X5 connects you to the road in a fun way and you’ll enjoy every minute you spend in it. Whether driving on snow, ice, gravel, water, the vehicle feels planted which inspires confidence with every turn of the steering wheel. If you want to turn down the vehicle’s excitement level, switching from Sports, to Comfort or Eco Pro, oughta do it for you. But why throw a wrench into your excitement factor?

The xDrive35i all-wheel-drive models feature a 3.0-liter turbo inline-6 that produces 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque and according to BMW, the SUV reaches 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. If you’re looking for more snapback, the X5’s M Sport package cranks it up to 440 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque.

Is the X5 a boozer at the pumps? Well the midsized vehicle offers a decent EPA guesstimate of 18 city/27 hwy and 21 combo.

As far as safety standards, BMW has got you covered offering traction and stability control, antilock brakes, automatic brake drying and airbags all around just to name a few. Got a few extra Benjamins burning a hole in your pocket? Opt for a few more safety goodies such as Traffic Jam Assistant that maintains following distance and keeps the vehicle at the center of its lane by providing steering input, BMW Night Vision, Parking Assistant, Surround View system, and Active Blind Spot Detection.

The 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i has got it going on in more ways than one and is sure to make any reality show wannabe, a star on the road.

Prices start at $52,800 for the entry X5 sDrive35i. Need more info? www.bmwusa.com
