Since 1978, Land Rover has produced some of the most capable and versatile sport utilities available. After Jeep, the brand is noted to be the second oldest four-wheel drive brand in the world. Headquartered in the United Kingdom, the iconic brand has consistently released an encompassing range of off road vehicles. The brand has changed ownership over the years with several different companies, but since 2008, Tata Motors, one of India’s largest firms, which also owns Jaguar, acquired Land Rover.
Since purchased by Tata, the organization has invested much-needed research and development dollars toward the Land Rover brand. Just recently at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, Land Rover debuted the all-new range topping Range Rover. The model introduced an all-new generation of the four-wheel drive flagship to the world, and also presents the industry's first all-aluminum construction sport utility vehicle. The new Range Rover Supercharged weighs in at about 5100 pounds, a nearly 700 pound weight loss, or 39% lighter compared to the previous generation.
The test vehicle was delivered completely loaded with nearly every option available for a total MSRP of just $111,620. The price included exclusive packaging like the Four Zone Climate system that includes heated/ventilated seats with massagers and a front cooler box. Other options include a Vision Assist Pack with advanced surround camera systems and reverse traffic detection. For added luxury comfort, the vehicle is upholstered in premium black Oxford Leather. Controls and information are prominently displayed on the standard 8-inch touch screen.
On the exterior, the aggressive design language is derived from the fashionable Evoque model, and is enhanced by the new 21-inch multi-spoke wheels. The test vehicle was painted in the classy Indus Silver Metallic, which immediately complimented the luxurious Ebony Black and Cirrus interior. Another exclusive feature was the puddle lamp greeting of "Range Rover" that prominently displayed on the curbside when unlocking the doors, or the parking lights from the keypad. The rear tinted glass and full panoramic glass roof defined the luxury ambiance.
With the reduction in weight, the Rover is now able to achieve a slightly faster acceleration, as well as improved fuel economy. This year, Range Rover says that the new model will return 15 city/19 highway MPG. When first noting the updated bold new design, it's hard to affiliate this vehicle as a performance vehicle, but the new Range Rover Supercharged can achieve 60 mph in just about 5 seconds. However, with impressive features like the Electronic Cross Linked Air Suspension, Terrain Response 2 Auto off road control, and Permanent Four Wheel Drive, this utility model can handle some of the most rugged terrain on earth.
When it comes to the ultimate in luxury and versatility, the Range Rover Supercharged simply stands in a class by itself. Many upscale manufacturers like Bentley and Maserati have noted the market demand for high-end sport utilities, and are now looking to produce a close competitor. Currently, there are not many vehicles available in the industry that can compete with the Range Rover Supercharged. The luxury amenities and ruggedness of the new Range Rover directly fit into the South Florida lifestyle.
