At the John Given Wines (Importer of Fine Italian Wines) table, Susan Hasbrouck offered about six selections to taste; the 2007 Antica Enotria Nero Di Troia, Puglia IGT got some attention. This wine is produced 100% organically by Antica Enotria Winery, located in the province of Foggia just a few miles from the Gulf of Manfredonia in Puglia; a long, thin wine region in the far south-eastern corner of the "boot" of Italy. This red wine is made with 100% Nero Di Troia grape, also known as Uva di Troia; is an indigenous grape of this region.

This grape was traditionally grown for volume, therefore clones that produced large compact bunches, with fairly large grapes were preferred by farmers. Because of this cluster structure, ripening was uneven, and as a result most of the bunches had a few unripe grapes, which contributed harsh unripe tannins. Today with more effort put on quality rather than quantity farmers are propagating Nero di Troia vines that produce smaller, looser clusters of grapes that ripen more uniformly ending up with a better wine, more true to its fruit character.

2007 Antica Enotria Nero Di Troia, Puglia IGT (Certified Organic): This less known red varietal wine has a modest bouquet that offers a peculiar aroma of a fresh open roll of packing tape but also blackberry, dark cherry and cranberry with notes of cedar earth and bacon. On the palate this wine feels medium to full-bodied with noticeable acidity, firm tannins, bitter-sweet fruit flavors and hints of red meat and oak. This intriguing red wine leaves you with the desire of wanting more. Average reatil price is $16.

In Atlanta you can find this wine at your favorite wine retail store like, The Wine Cellars, Niko's Wine Corner, Perrine's Wine, All Y' alls Wines, J's Beverage Depot, Ansley Wine Merchants, Halls of Fine Wines, Sherlock's Wine, Mac's Beer and Wine, Decatur Wine and Spirits, HopCity Craft Beer and Wine, Tower Wine and Spirits, Total Wine, Green's and The Dekalb Farmer's Market.
