19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards
At The Theatre with Audrey Linden
The SAG Awards is yet another predictor of who might win an Oscar. This is an award from acting peers for television shows, mini-series, and motion pictures from the newly formed SAG-AFTRA. SAG-AFTRA President Ken Howard heralded in the very first official SAG-AFTRA Awards show at the Shrine Exposition Center, which marked the merger of two show biz unions into one union of 165,000 members.. Loreal of Paris was the sponsor.
A montage of footage was shown which went back to James Cagney when the first show business union, SAG was formed by film actors. AFTRA was later formed by radio actors. In the 1950’s AFTRA included television actors.
Alec Baldwin of “Thirty Rock” came onstage to receive his “Actor” award for Male Lead in a Comedy. The dapper Baldwin thanked the greatest agent at CAA, Matt Del Piano and also his new wife, Ellria. Tina Fey, of the departing “Thirty Rock”, won for Female Actor in a Comedy. “Thank you for letting me in this Union.” “I’m sharing this with my sweet friend, Amy Poehler.” She thanked her husband, musician, Jeff Richmon for scoring her show for free. Best Comedy Ensemble went to “Modern Family” which had an ensemble of eleven actors. This represented three consecutive wins for the show. “Modern Family” beat “Glee”, “Nurse Jackie”, “Thirty Rock”, and “The Office.”
Best Actress in a Mini Series, T V Movie went to Julianne Moore for her portrayal of Sara Palin in “Game Change” and was her tenth nomination and first win. She also won the Golden Globe.Kevin Costner won Best Actor in a Mini Series, TV Movie for his role in “The Hatfields and Mc Coys.” Kostner also won the Golden Globe for his role.
The still handsome Dick Van Dyke , comedy legend, was honored for a Lifetime Achievement Award. Footage of highlights of his illustrious career was shown. Van Dyke, who grew up in Danville, Illinois won five Emmys. He had won for “Diagnosis Murder”. He quipped he is in a line of work that doesn’t require growing up. He thanked his new wife, Arlene for making him a happy man and plugged his singing group, the Vantasticks.”
Best Male Actor in a Drama went to Bryan Cranston. It was his first win, and he was also in the running for Best Ensemble for both “Breaking Bad” and the motion picture, “Argo.” He was very humble as he thanked his fellow actors “for making me a better actor.” Claire Danes won for Best Female Actor in a Drama for “Homeland.” It was her second win as she got it last year for “Temple Grandin.” Danes also was nominated for “Homeland” ensemble. She spoke as a “brand new, spankin mom” and said, “It takes a village to do a T V series”. Best Ensemble in a Drama went to “Downton Abbey”. Michelle Dockery spoke for the group. It was their first nomination and first win.
Best Female Actor Lead in a film went to 22 year old, Jennifer Lawrence for ‘Silver Linings Playbook”. It was her first win. She also won the Golden Globe. She thanked a smiling Harvey Weinstein for “nourishing the filmmaker who in turn nourished me”. The ensemble was also nominated. Best Actor in a Lead went to Daniel-Day Lewis who also won the Golden Globe. It was his third win and the cast of “Lincoln” was also nominated for ensemble. Lewis quoted the Hippocratic Oath doctors take “to do no harm.” He made an interesting observation. Lincoln was “murdered by an actor and it is fitting that he is brought back to life by an actor” He also thanked Steven Spielberg and said he shared his award with the entire cast,
The cast of “Argo” won for ensemble with a cast of thirteen actors and Ben Affleck proudly accepted the SAG-AFTRA Award. “Argo” also had won the Golden Globe for best film.
Anne Hathaway won for Best Supporting Actress in A Film for her role of Fantine in “Les Miserable” and also had won the Golden Globe. Best Supporting Actor in A Film went to Tommy Lee Jones for his role in “Lincoln.”
