It’s a socially conscious coffee klatch: Slow Food Santa Cruz is hosting a coffee event at Verve on Saturday, July 31, and you are invited. Promoted as a “casual get-together of Slow Foodies, fair traders, budding baristas, coffee addicts,” it’s geared toward anyone and everyone interested in learning more about coffee.
The event is free and begins at 10:30am at Verve Coffee’s café with a half hour to gather and socialize. At 11am, attendees will go next door to Verve’s roastery for complimentary “cupping” (otherwise known as tasting). You’ll have the opportunity to see how local roasters create custom blends, and discover how to select the best beans for your personal taste. You can learn a wealth of interesting coffee information including the differences in taste between beans of coffee-growing regions, how small businesses source their beans, and what you can do as a consumer to help support sustainable small farms and fair trade in the coffee industry. You’ll also receive brewing tips from Verve’s award- winning baristas (read about barista championship in this NY Times article and on Verve’s site here).
This event aims to teach us about integrating the Slow Food philosophy of “Good. Clean. Fair.” into our coffee consumption. Sounds like a great idea! Space is limited so Slow Food Santa Cruz encourages people to RSVP online at this Facebook page (but RSVPs are not required). Slow Food members will receive a 25% discount on all drinks and 10% off all coffee beans purchased during Saturday's event.
The Verve program is the first of Slow Food Santa Cruz’s “Summer Slow Down” series. Slow Food Santa Cruz, an active chapter of Slow Food USA, is “a diverse group of food enthusiasts with a curiosity about food traditions and heritage and local artisanal products” (as stated on web site).
