You've stretched, you've sweated, you've tried not to stare at others doing the same as you found your zen place. Now your stomach's growling and you just can't be bothered by the thought of whipping something up with last night's leftovers. Below are the five best post downward-dog dining options, casual enough to go in your flared crop-pants, but nice enough to get a little lemon in your water. Om to that.
1. Arizmendi: If you're looking for some coffee and a little something sweet after Savasana, hit up Arizmendi for delicious morning pastries, organic and fair trade coffee and espresso drinks, artisan breads, and gourmet pizza. See their website for a detailed bread and pizza schedule (changes daily). Don't miss the chocolate-cherry sourdough, housemade granola, and cheese scones. The best part about Arizmendi: it's a worker-owned cooperative so you're supporting a very local business and they love and care for the products they put out each day. Good all the way around. Breakfast-Simple Dinner ($)
2. Cafe Gratitude: Mathew and Terces Engelhart opened Cafe Gratitude after discovering how good they felt eating 'live foods;' they wanted to share their passion with the public. The cafe serves organic, locally-sourced food that generally hasn't been heated or cooked (with a few exceptions)--the idea being that heat kills all the good, live nutrients. Try the "I am Grace" coconut smoothie, Live Pizza, and nutmilk ice cream for dessert . Breakfast-Dinner ($$$)
3. The Plant Cafe Organic: This breezy Embarcadero cafe serves organic soups, sandwiches, fresh juices, and entree dishes at--drumroll, please--affordable prices. Perfect for post-yoga noshing, they offer counter order sit down service, take-out, or grab and go. The housemade Plant Burger (lentils, mushrooms, beets, and bulgar wheat) is unbelievable--you'll never look at Boca Burgers the same way. If you find yourself needing a little animal protein to get you through the afternoon, never fear: try the Tuscan chicken panini or the ever-popular crabcakes. The Plant Cafe carries an impressive selection of vegan desserts-take one home for later. Lunch/Dinner, Weekend Brunch ($$)
4. Herbivore is a vegan restaurant, but non-vegans take note: you won't find yourself missing anything. The menu is international, serving lovely soups and salads; the moussaka and pad thai are both memorable. Setting Herbivore apart are their organic wines, thoughtful beer selection, and cocktails made from soju korean distilled grain spirit. Don't ask, just imbibe. You've worked for it. Breakfast-Dinner ($$)
5. Underdog: Most people don't equate a yogic lifestyle with the sodium, nitrates, and fillers you often find in hot dogs. But if you've got a craving that just won't quit, head straight to Underdog where you'll find a variety of organic dogs (and tater tots) to suit your taste. I have not had the pleasure of eating here yet, but other people have good things to say! The folks at Underdog are doing their best for our health and the planet: even the ketchup's organic. Vegan and Vegetarian options as well. Lunch/Dinner ($)
Key Based on Treats/Lunch for One: ($) Under $10, ($$) $10-$20, ($$$) 20 and up
