Gingi...Coming Soon @ 4th and B in San Mateo
A quick stroll through downtown San Mateo's B Street will reveal one of the newest upcoming additions to the culinary offerings of the city: Ginji is a Japanese izakaya restaurant that will be serving Japanese tapas, yakitori, and sushi, per the small text on the sign in the window.
A quick internet search doesn't reveal much else about this mysterious restaurant, but Japanese food lovers from all around have their mouths watering at the idea of a another place to enjoy a night out with some premium sushi.
Izakayas are a very popular type of dining in Japan and are well described as "Japanese tapas" as the menu typically consists of dozens of small dishes meant to accompany beer and sake and be shared among a group of people. They are a fun way to try many different dishes and typically are a lively scene due to the nature of the dining style.
If you're looking for a place to try out this increasingly popular cuisine, try out Izakaya Mai at 212 2nd Avenue in San Mateo which is open every day but Monday and touts itself as a "truly authentic" Japanese izakaya restaurant.
For now we'll all keep our fingers crossed for Ginji and hope it really does open soon!
