Fresh bread, baked daily
Looking for the best hoagie in
Unlike other sandwich shops, Sarcone’s doesn’t do short cuts. They bake their own bread in a brick oven and use expensive ingredients like freshly roasted vegetables, Italian specialty meats and more expensive cheeses. Sure, the place has a little South Philly attitude (sandwich names include Tony “The Boss” Soprano, Frank Sinatra and Ava Maria – whaddya expect) and the store is so small you might have to wait outside while other people order, but that’s part of the charm.
Hoagie traditionalists will love the “Old Fashioned Italian” brimming with thinly sliced prosciutto, hot sopressata, coppa, sharp provolone, herbs, lettuce, tomato and onion. But surprisingly, this is a spot that you can bring your vegetarian sister to as well. The "Exotic Veggie" version, one of several meat-free options, overflows with breaded eggplant, roasted peppers, broccoli rabe,
Extras: While you wait for your sub, don’t try to cram into the crowded shop. Instead, those “in the know” walk up the half-block to Sarcone’s Bakery and grab a slice of their Silician-style tomato pie. They sell out of both pizza and bread fast, so make sure to get to both the deli and the bakery early (i.e. before noon on the weekends) or else you may be disappointed. Calling ahead is always a safe bet. Sarcone’s also offers catering, as well as a free tour to patrons who are interested in their brick oven baking facility.
