Detroit Eats Brunch: Dino's Lounge Ferndale

We stopped at Dino’s Lounge in Ferndale for brunch today. As noted on their website, Dino’s is upscale, but not uptight. The décor is cozy, the lights are dim, and the wait staff is friendly.

We were seated quickly on this Sunday afternoon, and offered our choice of bottomless Mimosas or Bloody Marys. We chose the mimosas and they were pretty good—and definitely bottomless, as our waiter refilled our glasses before we ever came close to finishing the previous pour. For the Bloody Mary crowd, there’s a bar near the door where patrons can add whatever condiments they choose to create their own signature cocktail.

The menu is an eclectic mix of brunch classics and twists on the same. For example, in addition to Eggs Benedict, there’s a Crab Benedict with sautéed crab cakes nestled between poached eggs and English muffin halves, all topped with hollandaise sauce.

The French Toast is fairly straightforward, made with thick cut challah bread and griddled to a tasty golden brown, before being topped with toasted walnuts and whipped cream. I paired mine with some Canadian Bacon. Taking the idea of griddled bread south of the border, Dino's offers French Toasted Breakfast Quesadilla-- an egg washed herb and garlic tortilla is stuffed with scrambled eggs, diced peppers, ground breakfast sausage and three cheeses, and grilled to a golden brown.

Our other choice this brunch was the Montecristo Gigantico—a large French toasted focaccia stuffed with ham, roasted turkey, smoked bacon, hash browns and Swiss, and dusted with powdered sugar. Maple syrup is served on the side, but we didn’t bother. The powdered sugar created enough sweet to balance the savory smokiness of the ham and turkey. The end result was delicious flavor profile.

An item I’m looking forward to going back for is the Breakfast Sliders with scrambled eggs, cheddar and Canadian bacon served on slider buns, with potatoes on the side.

If you’re an omelet lover, check out the Frittata Oscar, with asparagus and crab meat, all smothered in Hollandaise; or try the Apple Walnut buttermilk pancakes with sautéed honey glazed apples and crushed walnuts.

Brunch at Dino’s is quite relaxing. I’ve also tried dinner here, which is top notch as well. Check them out for yourself, and follow Dino’s on twitter!
