“Science Uncorked: Sights and Smells” wine event

On Thursday, September 8 from 7-9pm, “Science Uncorked: Sights and Smells” will offer a unique look (or smell!) into part of the wine-tasting experience that is often overlooked: the aromatic and visual aspects of the vineyard vino.

Two important parts of the wine tasting experience that people often overlook are sight and smell. These two senses are the focus of the September 8 Science Uncorked at the Maryland Science Center. Sharon Charny, a 20-year wine veteran, will use the official A.C. Noble Wine Aroma Wheel to help participants discover the aromas found in wines, which sometimes include unexpected scents like bacon, cut green grass, and honey. Wine tasters will also examine what they can discern about a wine by analyzing its color and density.

It won’t be all seeing and smelling wine at Science Uncorked—there will also be a lot of tasting. Sharon will explain important tasting techniques like palate calibration, which demonstrates where on the palate the four structural components of wine fall. Participants will have many chances to practice these tasting techniques with a variety of wines, and appropriate food will accompany each wine selection.
