Pudgie's returning to Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, NY -- Pudgie's Pizza, Pasta & Subs, which has been out of the Triple Cities for some years, apparently is planning a return engagement.

M.P. Cleary, the Elmira-based chain which has locations in Elmira, Waverly, Dundee, Rochester and Canandaigua, as well as Mansfield, PA, recently purchased for $200,000 and began renovating a former restaurant at 224 Robinson Street, once occupied by Carnsie's, a neighborhood pub that closed after a fire in 2003.

It briefly was occupied by the G. Bailey's pub, but it closed last summer.

M.P. Cleary also owns several Five Guys Burgers and Fries locations. It previously had Broome County locations in Binghamton and Endicott. The new location on Robinson Street becomes part of a general upgrade in the business corridor, highlighted by the city's efforts to tear down some vacant buildings and undertake beautification projects.

Notes On Napkins: Owners David and Robert Cleary give this bit of history about the M.P. Cleary company:"Pudgie's ... opened its first pizza and sub operation in Elmira in April 1963. The founder, Michael P. Cleary [their father] also founded Pudgie's Pizza Franchising Corp. in 1972 and M.P. Cleary Inc. in 1989. ... Due to (his) untimely passing in 1990, all of Pudgie's locations eventually became non-franchised locations. ... from 1990 to the present,, the family has owned and operated the Elmira 'Southside' location as well as other locations in NY and PA."
