Blacksburg residents head downtown to celebrate St. Patrick's Day

March 17th (also known as St. Patrick's Day) wasn't your typical, quiet weeknight in downtown Blacksburg. Although the parking lots weren't packed as full as they would be on a Friday or Saturday night, the display of Irish spirit by Virginia Tech students and others was far from mediocre.

Revelers loudly enjoyed themselves and called to friends as they wandered the streets from bar to bar.

The Cellar was pleasantly packed upstairs and downstairs with St. Patrick's Day patrons decked out in green t-shirts, green beads, and green, shamrock-splattered hats. There were still some tables available at 10:30 pm, although the bar continued to fill as the night progressed.

Sharkey's was standing-room only, and partiers spilled out onto the patio to enjoy some crisp early-spring air. The Rivermill hosted a nice gathering of people, but never quite got to full capacity.

By far the most popular destination in downtown Blacksburg on St. Patrick's Day was Top Of The Stairs, affectionately called TOTS by Virginia Tech students. The bar charged a cover and a line started to form by 10:30. By midnight, the line reached down the sidewalk, and TOTS was bursting at the seams with patrons occupying the balcony and patio areas as well as the bar itself.

It was quite a scene. If you missed it, just comfort yourself with the thought that you only have 364 days to wait until the next St. Patrick's Day.
