It's true. You didn't know Global Warming causes war? It said so right in the Washington Post.
The Cold War shaped world politics for half a century. But global warming may shape the patterns of global conflict for much longer than that -- and help spark clashes that will be, in every sense of the word, hot wars. We're used to thinking of climate change as an environmental problem, not a military one, but it's long past time to alter that mindset. Climate change may mean changes in Western lifestyles, but in some parts of the world, it will mean far more. Living in Washington, I may respond to global warming by buying a Prius, planting a tree or lowering my thermostat. But elsewhere, people will respond to climate change by building bomb shelters and buying guns.

When it got to 82 degrees, they decided to fight
This simpleton is literally saying that Global Warming will cause major wars. By this logic, summertime causes war. It presupposes that people are unable to think clearly when the temperature goes up from 80 to 82 degrees and, in their fevered states, they will start wars.
Here is the first of his three examples of how Global Warming will cause war.
The first is conflict arising from scarcity. As the world gets hotter and drier, glaciers will melt, and the amount of arable land will shrink. In turn, fresh water, plants, crops and cattle and other domestic animals will be harder to come by, thereby spurring competition and conflict over what's left. In extreme examples, a truly desiccated ecosystem could mean a complete evacuation of a hard-hit region. And the more people move, the more they will jostle with their new neighbors.
So people want to move to nicer climates? And this is new? And Global Warming is going to happen so fast that there will be a mass exodus from hot countries to cooler ones? "Global Warming" must be liberal code words for "Forest Fire." If the world were getting hotter, which it isn't, it would take a very long time to have any mass effect on people's desire to move.
This silly theory also discounts that people migrate for many reasons, none of which has anything to do with Global Warming. Are the Mexicans coming to the United States because Mexico is so damn hot or because we have freedom and opportunity to give them a better life?
Question: If Global Warming causes war, does Global Cooling cause peace? If Global Warming will cause trauma, massive population displacement, and battles for resources, would Global Cooling cause harmony and tranquility to reign the world over? If we do everything these Kool-Aid drinking whack-jobs want us to do to reduce Global Warming, will there be world peace?
Finally, we should also worry about new conflicts over issues of sovereignty that we didn't need to deal with in our older, colder world. Consider the Northwest Passage, which is turning into an ice-free corridor from Europe to Asia during the summer months. Canada claims some portions of the route as its own sovereign waters, while the United States argues that these sections lie within international waters. Admittedly, it'd take a lot of tension for this to turn into a military conflict, but anyone convinced that the United States and Canada could never come to blows has forgotten the War of 1812. And not all this sort of resource conflict will occur between friendly countries.
Wouldn't Global Cooling be worse? Wouldn't countries fight more over increasingly frozen sea-lanes, rather than ones that were opening up due to melting ice? Wouldn't they fight more for shrinking cropland due to creeping Global Cooling? Wouldn't they fight for natural resources to thaw frozen populations rather than for resources to cool them off?
The world continues its natural cycle of warming and cooling. That we are in a period of Global Cooling, and people still write articles like this shows how fanatical they are. Fanatics never let the facts get in the way of their hysterical rants. And as the laughter directed at them grows, they just yell louder and louder.
Thirty Years of Warmer Temperatures Go Poof

This silly theory is easily understood if you just look at the Colorodo river and the cities that rely on its water.
Now that Bush has opened up an additional 150000 acres for oil shale and uranium, a massive spill or poisoning would impact 6 states and cause an overnight migration.
You asked why we wouldn't fight over frozen sea-lanes? The northwest passage has always been frozen and noone fights over something that isn't of use.
Earl, the point is not whether people fight over the status quo (re: the Northwest Passage), it is whether they would fight more if there were global cooling, which would close off existing sea lanes, or over global warming, which would open up more.
I still say fewer resources due to cold would cause more fighting.
Looks like insane fear mongering to me. Gullible warming can't cause a war. People can be monumentally stupid and blame a war on gullible warming but that won't make it true. People can use gullible warming as some lame excuse or some lame justification but twisting perception will never change reality. Lame, lame, lame. People cause wars. Plain and simple. Human nature. People trying to control people. Take people out of the equation and resources don't matter. Everybody wants to rule the world as they say. The gullible warming crowd is no different really. They want global regulations, rules and control. The problem is nobody really likes to be controlled... ok, nobody sane. But people are gullible at least for a time.
By the way, have THEY noticed? We are cooling. Have been for some time now. And not just a little. That's why they call it climate change now so they must have noticed at least a little. It was getting a little too obvious gullible warming is a farce. But now they think they can blame any change at all on gullible warming so they are even worse if anything. I read just the other day they think gullible warming killed the Loch Ness Monster. They are convinced cows and kangaroos farting and burping is causing even more gullible warming than we are and are now spending millions on that alone. I think their cheese slipped off the cracker myself.
Ever hear the expression "follow the money"??
Al Gore has really stepped in it this time. He could have spent the rest of his global warming career collecting money by spreading fear over events that were a century or at least half century in the future. Oh, but that wasnt good enough for Big Al. Hes now told the biggest global warming whopper of his alarmist career:
AL GORE HAS PREDICTED THAT THE NORTHERN POLAR ICE CAP WILL BE COMPLETELY GONE IN FIVE YEARS!!!
When I heard this I assumed it was a rumor started by skeptics to make Gore look bad. It wasnt until I viewed the video that I realized what Gore had done. Gore has started a five year credibility countdown timer ticking and its up to all of us to make sure that he is held accountable and proven to be a fraud when his dire prediction aimed at drumming up support doesnt come true.
The mainstream media isnt going to let this video see the light of day because they, unlike Al, understand the precarious position in which he has placed himself.
It is therefore up to us to spread the word about Big Als prediction. He must be exposed for the fear mongering opportunist that he has become.
To view the video, please visit the following site and click on the picture of Big Al holding up five fingers.

Sometimes, in courts and interrogation rooms you find that if you just wind someone up just right, they will totally self-destruct without any further prompting.
This is pretty much the case with the whole AGW charade. When it was a scary and shadowy idea, I made a big ruckus about what a sham it was. But now that it has moved into full mainstream visibility, it requires no prompting to reveal iself as total alarmist propaganda, that any thinking person can quickly see through. This article illustrates these points perfectly.
I encourage all citizens to read and explore all media coverage on this prominent issue. THAT will do more to bring this ruse to an end than anything any scientist or concerned citizen can say or do.
I am appalled at the media's incompetency when it comes to reporting science. The Global Warming phenomenon is, perhaps, the best example of what incurious lemmings they are.
Anyone who has spent time actually reading the research out there understands that AGW is based on global climate models that are neither accurate nor reliable. There is a plethora of research by credible scientists which points to the multiple causes for our naturally changing climate.
It's amazing that anyone still listens to Gore. The British courts declared his "documentary" a polemic and required that 9 inaccuracies or outright lies be pointed out before school children view the film. Yet, the man keeps making more fantastic claims, as he recently did at the climate summit in Poland.
Now we have a President who will give creedence to this bilge and strangle the economy in an attempt to cure what can't be cured.
There was a great piece in the UK Telegraph talking about how 2008 was the beginning of the end of the Man-made Global Warming fad.
Plug this term into a search engine and take a look:
"2008 was the year man-made global warming was disproved"
The trouble with the Gorebots is that they forgot the maxim that you are entitled to your own opinion, but you don't get to have your own facts. Those damn facts are troublesome things when they show we are in a cooling period.
Tom, that is why I don't use the term Climate Change. The libs got to pick the name of their hoax and I am going to hold them to it. No goalpost moving from Global Warming to Climate Change when the first name becomes, shall we say . . . inconvenient.
Global Warming causes war too.
Thanks for good thinking that U 1st find out this kind of comment.
What if you are wrong? The logical way of thinking about this is to calculate the probability of climat change, then calculate the cost if it happens. Then compare the cost of doing nothing to the cost of doing something, given that we are not certain in what will happen. Science is a give and take.
The premise of your question is faulty. We all agree that the Earth heats and cools in cycles, irrespective of anything human beings do. If we recognize that that trend will continue, we just adapt as we have always done. We seem to be in a cooling cycle. Wouldn't it be logical, if you believe that man has any appreciable impact on Global Warming, which I do not, to produce more CO2 to keep us out of the deep freeze? Let's fire up those SUV's!
Bill, thanks for a great article. Keep up the good work. This is important, dare I say critical stuff. We will destroy our economy and way of life pursuing "global warming" solutions. Even if one accepts the AGW argument (which I don't..I've done too much research, understand the basic science, know how the models work, have seen the satellite data, have watched McKitrick & McIntyre discredit the Mann hockey stick, etc.), any policies we pass to try and thwart it are prohibitively expensive and environmentally inconsequential. There is equal or greater evidence to suggest that atmospheric CO2 increases FOLLOW warming, not cause it.
To John Tafegian's point/question, looking at this situation via cost/benefit analysis is a smart way to come at this issue. Fortunately for us, this work has already been done, ad nauseum. John, you probably haven't read about these analyses, but you need to review the work of William Nordhaus (Yale professor, world leader in economics of "global warming") analyzing the cost/benefit of Kyoto and Kyoto-like policies. I tried to attach a link to his work to get you started but this site doesn't allow it. Point is, this work has been done and proves that Kyoto and all it's progeny are a total waste of money. A collossal waste.
The new breed of environmentalists are watermelons. Green on the outside and red on the inside.
