A Washington-Post ABC news poll found that three quarters of Americans believe that the government should take more steps to regulate the greenhouse gasses from cars and factories.
However 52% believe that a cap and trade bill should be imposed.
The poll shows opposition to cap-and-trade has grown to 42 percent, from 34 percent from July last of last year. Support for climate legislation has slipped slightly among people asked whether they were willing to pay more for electricity to help reduce greenhouse gases.
The House narrowly passed the bill with a 219-212 vote. Only 8 Republicans voted in favor of it.
At 2:49 A.M on the day the bill was voted on, Congressman Waxman added a 309 page amendment to the already 1,200 page bill giving House members virtually no time to read the additions. Only a couple hours was allowed for debate.
Senator Inhofe of Oklahoma said “It doesn’t matter,” he declared flatly, “because we’ll kill it in the Senate anyway.”
This bill is being called 'the biggest tax increase in history'. Senator Inhofe predicts Democrats will probably get around 34 towards breaking the anticipated Republican filibuster, but will ultimately fall short.

On the House floor, Democrats hailed the legislation as historic, while Republicans said it would damage the economy without solving the nation's energy woes.
It is "the most important energy and environmental legislation in the history of our country," said Rep. Ed Markey of Massachusetts. "It sets a new course for our country, one that steers us away from foreign oil and towards a path of clean American energy."
But Rep. John Boehner, the House Republican leader, used an extraordinary one-hour speech shortly before the final vote to warn of unintended consequences in what he said was a "defining bill." He called it a "bureaucratic nightmare" that would cost jobs, depress real estate prices and put the government into parts of the economy where it now has no role."
Looking around the internet I have found that people are either adamantly for this, or drastically opposed to it. I figured I would open this topic up to you guys.
What are your thoughts on this issue. Do you think this bill should or should not be passed and why?

This bill will be very bad for America. Big companies will easily either spend the money to reduce their emissions or buy the necessary "carbon credits." Smaller companies will be less able to spend the extra money. BOTH groups will distribute the extra costs to the consumers by raising the energy prices. Then, when energy prices go up, it will cost more to ship energy. That cost will ALSO trickle down to the consumer through raises in price.
That's not all this will apply to though. If fuel costs more, shipping ANYTHING costs more. Food prices will go up. Anything that has to ship to you will be effected.
Think about it. What is this bill even doing? Carbon emissions aren't even making a difference in our climate. The reason for any and all rising temperature is Earth's natural cycle. Our emissions don't change it. So, basically, we are creating a policy that will hurt citizens, but give the government more money.
How will this help us?

This bill would cripple the economy and take us one very large step closer to a socialist country.
Companies are struggling enough as it is. Thousands of businesses are closing their doors. What do you think another tax would do to them? No all industries can go green, what happens to those unfortunate companies? With this bill, they would have to pony up thousands or millions of dollars.
If this passes the Senate it will be the final nail in the coffin for all manufacturing jobs in America as they take flight overseas to countries that do not regulate and tax them into oblivion. It wouldn't surprise me if the oil and gas refining went to other countries like Mexico to avoid the huge tax hike. The idea that this will create "green" jobs is ridiculous. Most of those jobs will likely be temporary and/or government jobs of regulators which do not create wealth mind you. More intrusive government, higher taxes, higher costs of consumer goods, and more good paying jobs going overseas is what this will bring.
Funny that China is opening up itself to Capitalism more and more after seeing its fruits and we are shutting our doors down and insisting on more and more government domination over the economy.
This bill could raise your utility bill by fifty percent. What will that do to most people especially after so many have lost their jobs and others are on the verge? Or how about the elderly living on a fixed income. The cost of everything will go up because electricity and natural gas is used to produce every product we buy.
Some people say that this bill will create green jobs. Well what are green jobs anyway and how is that going to help people that have worked one job all their life and don't have the skill set to get one of their so called green jobs when their company is shut down by this bill.
And I would like to know how many of our reps actually read this bill in its entirety. 1200 pages with a 300 page amendment seems ridiculous to me and I am afraid it will be full of crap nobody supports.
There is to much false information out there and no way to tell what is true.
I am appalled that the people that have been elected to represent us in our Legislator are so out of touch with reality of the American people and are being led to slaughter by the leader of our country. Is this truly something they wish to go down in history for creating?
This bill's passage makes me feel hopeless, helpless and powerless for the destruction that this new Administration is perpetrating on the America we believed to be the best in on our globe. How does this make us "leaders" to be imulated by other countries????

Vote out the criminal representatives and senators and put in office some regular joe businessmen (statesmen) who will REPRESENT us. Of the people, by the people, for the people. That's just for starters.

The President helped fund profiteers of carbon tax program he is now seeking to implement. While on the board of a Chicago-based charity, Barack Obama helped fund a carbon trading exchange that will likely play a critical role in the cap-and-trade carbon reduction program he is now trying to push through Congress as president.
The charity was the Joyce Foundation on whose board of directors Obama served and which gave nearly $1.1 million in two separate grants that were “instrumental in developing and launching the privately-owned Chicago Climate Exchange, which now calls itself “North America’s only cap and trade system for all six greenhouse gases, with global affiliates and projects worldwide.”
And that’s only the beginning. The “privately-owned” Chicago Climate Exchange is heavily influenced by Obama cohorts Al Gore and Maurice Strong.
For years now Strong and Gore have been cashing in on that lucrative cottage industry known as man-made global warming.
This bill is plain craziness. Say goodbye to life as we know it, to America as we know it. Every American will pay for this mess.

For 5,000 years Chinese imperial aastronomers have closely correlated warming and cooling with sunspot activity. In 1801, William Herschel, the noted astronomer observed that high grain prices correlated to periods when sunspot activity was low. (Colder shorter growing season causing shortages) I am certian that the vermin that inhabit both houses of our congress know the truth. The states already have stiff emission controls that have to be met and are enforced. This bill is just smoke and mirrors to gain more control of everyday people by forcing us out of our homes, jobs, by starving us. I just can't fathom why congress wants to turn the USA into a third world country. Is it so that it would make it easier to turn us into an Islamic nation????? Led by a Muslim???? People wake up!!!!!
There is only one reason the majority of Democrats and a few confused Republicans support this Bill. They need the taxes generated from this bill to pay for the massive spending that the President wants to continue over the next three years. Obama needs it to pay for the incredibly costly National Health Care Plan, if it gets passed. I will continue to oppose both of these measures. Please, please, please, tell your elected officials to vote no on both of these programs.

What cap and trade means is China and India going to polute more. Other countries are not going to play on even terms thus America is doing nothing to help global warming while costing them entirely too much money to "look" green. 95% of our consumables come from China anyhow. Just go to any store and look at the tag. False hope from the left. Liberals can't be anything but delusional. This bill is not going to hurt our economy. It will not create any job losses at all and will help boost consumer spending. If the senate decides not to pass the legislation they will be preventing the planet from an impending struggle that will eventually cost us our ability to live. I strongly urge anyone reading this webpage along with the senate to vote in this legislation. Or you will be sorry. If the senate had any soul at all they would pass this bill.

Jobs will go overseas to countries that will increase their already excessive polluting - and our electric bills will increase. I live in VA and out electric company (Dominion) raised rates last year and have applied to the SCC to do so again this year - my monthly bills were right around $500 this past winter - no thanks to so called "global warming" - I can't afford another $1500-$3000/year in electric costs. I've got three small kids to take care of and hopefully send to college one day. I don't get any gov't handouts - I pay my own way. Maybe Nancy Pelosi will volunteer to pay the increase in my bill ??? Getting ready to email my "democratic" senators now, hope you all do the same!
Maybe the underlying "excuse" of climate change should be addressed instead of debating various approaches to dealing with it. Man Made Global Warming simply is not true...

I am adamantly against this bill. It would be irresponsible of the government to pass this legislation at this time. Our already shaky economy would collapse once again under the pressure of skyrocketing utility bills and more manufacturing jobs being lost.
It's one thing if every country in the world were adopting this same legislation. But they're not and our manufacturing jobs that we still have would relocate to other countries that have even less restrictions that are currently in place now. You think Mexico cares how much greenhouse gasses these new manufacturing jobs would increase down there? No, they would take the jobs and be happy to have them. This country didn't become the world economic leader by placing heavy handed restrictions on our businesses. It is incredibly irresponsible for us to pass this legislation. Especially at this time.

Wind and solar are the energy sources of the 21st century . . . B.C. They've been around forever and were largely discarded at the turn of the 20th century (A.D.)because they could not compete with better technologies based on combustion. Trying to bring them back as the silver bullets for our energy needs is a fantasy. Using them as an excuse for a government takeover of the energy industry and greater control over our lives is a travesty.

"Laughing", Bipartisanship is just a keyword for moderates. I am sick of all these politicians claiming to be bipartisan. We need more partisianship from those on the right, and less moderates in the republican party. Until then, I'm and independant.
