Robbing health care to pay for more health care

You have to love this one. Obama wants to cut Medicare and Medicaid by $200 billion so he can help pay for a public health care plan.

From the AP:

In a letter to senators Wednesday, Obama also said that if Congress ends up requiring individuals to purchase health insurance, people who can't afford it and small businesses should be exempt. He also strongly reiterated his support for a new public health insurance plan to compete against private insurers.

The letter to Sens. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., and Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairmen of the two committees writing health care bills, served as a marker for what the president wants to see in final legislation.

"The plans you are discussing embody my core belief that Americans should have better choices for health insurance, building on the principle that if they like the coverage they have now, they can keep it, while seeing their costs lowered as our reforms take hold," Obama wrote in the letter, released a day after he met privately with members of the committees that Kennedy and Baucus lead.

Once again he is touting the failed idea that an individual can keep their current insurance if they want or get public insurance. The problem is two-fold. One, the government plan will drive out private insurance indirectly forcing everyone on the public roles. Second, even if you choose private insurance you will still be paying for public insurance through your taxes.

However, the real story here is that you can already see what is going to happen. By cutting Medicare and Medicaid, you can see that the government can not afford a public health care system. They are robbing two already bloated health care plans to pay for yet another. If congress passes it regardless, that means they will cut benefits, procedures and medicine along the way. Is that worth paying for?

If Obama really wants people to have more choice and more competition, how about allowing people to buy health insurance from insurers out of their state of residence? That way they can circumvent ridiculous state imposed requirements, like single men having to pay for maternity insurance...
