Obama Administration struggles with great 'depression'

Stimulus left you feeling less than stimulated? Tax increases keeping you up at night? Is your small business failing because you make $250,005 a year, and are going to have it all wiped out so the wealth can be spread to the likes of Henrietta Hughes and General Motors? Or maybe rainy days and Mondays always get you down because Al Gore hasn't yet figured out how to control the weather.

Don't despair! Hope (and change) is on the horizon. President Obama and his staff know what what you're going through - after all, was it not them that foisted this delicious mess on you in the first place? So in an effort to make it all better, and ease you through the difficult transition from free society to government nationalization and socialism, they are offering a website to help you cope with the depression you are currently feeling. Because they care.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has launched a Guide to Getting Through Tough Economic Times.

Economic turmoil (e.g., increased unemployment, foreclosures, loss of investments and other financial distress) can result in a whole host of negative health effects - both physical and mental. It can be particularly devastating to your emotional and mental well-being. Although each of us is affected differently by economic troubles, these problems can add tremendous stress, which in turn can substantially increase the risk for developing such problems as:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Compulsive Behaviors (over-eating, excessive gambling, spending, etc.)

  • Substance Abuse

The site is a treasure trove of government assistance links, such as applying for welfare, renegotiating your mortgage, foreclosure and even a link on how us journalists should cover these "sensitive" topics (This Examiner did not click that link, obviously).

So if you feel disaffected by government policy, there is another government policy in place to cheer you up.

For more info: If you suffer from depression or have thoughts of suicide, please do not waste valuable minutes on a government website. Call your doctor. Call a friend. Get some concrete help. Your life is too precious to leave in the hands of bureaucracy. If your situation is dire, the Samaritans can help you talk it through. Call 877-870-HOPE (4673)

I'm glad you didn't click on that "Journalist Link", since you are not a journalist it would have been pointless...

That being said the conservative spin machine continues to spin and spin and spin and not go anywhere...Tax increases? For who? The top 5% of earners whom the conservatives so shamelessly represent? Not sure whom I'm supposed to feel sorry for, the Uber-rich who will get a tax increase? Or the undereducated conservative base that's been hollowed out my the neo-conservative agenda? Tough call...

Clinton- Obama is not going after the wealthy either- that is a big con job-

If you follow the money you will see that a lot of it flowed from Wall Street, AIG and Big Banks right to Obama, Frank and Dodd. The big joke is that the Democrats are elitist who are the enemies of the middle class. This stupid tax cut Obama proposed would be more than offset with increased energy cost and just wait until this cap and trade stuff starts- You think Enron was a scam wait until brokers start selling carbon credits. This will serve to be a regressive tax passed on to the lower and middle classes.
I don't think the Republicans represent the middle class either and but at least they do not hide the fact as much..
Bush was guilty of governing like a democrat- that is he spent a lot of money that we did not have and Obama is about to double down on stupid. The only upside as a Libertarian is this will be the end of wild eyed left wing economic policy for a long time once he throws the economy off a cliff- but we'll have to suffer for it

Mark, did you say you were a Libertarian? How's that going for you?

The U.S. is one of the most conservative 1st world countries out there, and to think that by becoming more conservative as an answer to our problems, is almost delusional. Less regulation? After what these financial institutions have done, how can you make that argument? What evidence do you have besides some vague notion of the "free-market" to base this opinion?

Fact, conservatives tend to be less educated, more religious, and more in denial psychologically. (this explains the delusion of our friend Mark here). While liberals, (or "Librulls" as middle america likes to call them), tend to be more educated, compassionate, and emotionally capable of change.

As I look at Obama's poll numbers (66%!), I have to wonder if conservatives will ever make a comeback, (outside of the local KKK rally of course), and I wonder if they will ever put it together that America is sick of their simplistic, naive view of the world...

Clinton- as a Libertarian I'm not in favor of a conservative social drift. The fact is regulation got us in this mess when the Clinton Admin. Forced Freddy Mac and Fannie Mae and other banks to make loans to people who could not afford them. If you think progressive economic theory works then please point a place where it has done so. California (my home state) is a wreck as a result of our far left legislature trying to create a progressive Utopia and we are almost bankrupt, have the worst schools in the country, violent crime, out of control border, crumbing infrastructure and the list goes on. California was the wealthiest state in the union and it is on the way to ruin.
The country the left most idolizes (France) along with Germany are trying to turn to the right as they realize there health care is a disaster and they have had systemic high unemployment for decades as compared to the U.S.- Germany is even lecturing Obama as I write this about over spending and growing the government. The last time we did this FDR printed money and destroyed the German currency and ruined Germany along with several other European countries' economies (we know where this lead) as a result of this. If you really study history then you know the New Deal prolonged the depression and did not work. It was WWII that jump started our economy.

As far you your sny comment about education level between the Left and the Right- I don't buy it. I'm pretty educated my self and would like to point out that this is myth perpetrated by some in academia who decided to teach and make a 130 grand and receive tenure as opposed to going to wall Street, running law firms etc and are bitter about where they are in their lives as compared to their former class mates who decided they wanted something more in their lives. I will pose this question to you-

Please name any place where a diverse, large country like ours has a successful left wing economic policy?

I'm not defending the religous right- They have done nearly as much damage as the folks from the far left who worship at the altar of political correctness.

As a Libertarian I'm socially Liberal as far as people choosing their life style so long as I do not have to subsidize it. Gay marriage is fine by me, abortion should be personal choice, legalize weed and other causes I share with the social left.

I will never buy in to progressive left wing economic theory as there is no evidence that it has worked (look at Europe). You need to be very concerned as the moves the Obama Admin. is taking smells of Fascism (remember the Nazi's and Fascist were socialist not conservatives) with them intruding into business, banking, growing the government, expanding dependency on the government with entitlements and the most dangerous thing I've ever heard of is the fairness doctrine where the Government would be the arbiter of how broadcasting is conducted. Don't take for granted the freedoms that we have on the internet as I'm sure they will start regulating it very soon.

I don't like either of the parties as I've always thought the republicans didn't care about the middle class and the democrats despise it.

Sorry to dress you down like this, but I thought I needed to enlighten you a little.

Hmmm, do you even remember what happened in California? Right-Wingers, (with the help of Enron), caused rolling brown-outs throughout your state in a coup to get Gray Davis out of office. Then you guys installed, (er, "voted in"), a conservative ACTOR! And now the state is sinking! It has nothing to do with the ridiculous tax cuts the "Governator" gave out is it? Are you blaming liberals for Schwarzenegger? Sorry, I won't let you do it.

Like I said in my previous post, Obama's approval rating is through the roof, because America has become sick and tired of the B.S. lower taxes crowd. Doesn't work, the financial collapse, (the legacy of "Reaganomics"), is blamed, and rightly so, on the lack of regulations put on the financisl industry, Barack knows it, America knows it, why can't you conservatives figure it out?

Hows that hope and change working out for you?

Happy Indep- It is not working out that great, but I would rather cling to common sense and pragmatism and sell out to the other parties and their Dogma. If the Republicans had someone like Steve Forbes that would take a practical approach to the economy then I would consider a move, but I do not think it will happen.

Clinton- Being out here in California when all of that mess happened I have a pretty clear picture of what brought down Davis as Governor. That imbecile negotiated these stupid contracts with Enron (a creature of the 90's that grew on President Clinton's watch) but what really did him in was he was going to pass a huge regressive tax by tripling the DMV fees. I supported Arnold and initially he took on the heavily Democratic legislature out here, but eventually got rolled over when he attempted to pass propositions 2 years ago that would have curbed Government Power & Abuse. The Unions ran adds 24/7 ripping him apart. Since then he has completely caved and has gone along with the Dems to worsen the mess that Davis started. Enron was prosecuted on Bush's watch by the way (I'm not Bush fan as I though he was a disaster- but I need to set the record straight).
As far as Reagan was concerned the man inherited a disaster. In my opinion much worse that today as the interest rates were 20%, inflation was out of control, unemployment was at 10% nation wide as I recall, the Soviets were menacing the world and starting to prop up satellites in South America, the hostage crisis that went on for over 400 days etc.

When Reagan cut taxes the revenues for the government went way up. He tried to curb government spending but as you recall the democrats had almost absolute control of congress and he had to go along with spending in order to straighten the mess out Carter made with the military and foreign policy.

Bush's tax cut also brought record revenue to the government; unfortunately for him he spent like a big Democrat and ran up the debt.

By the way Clinton you were implying that conservatives were linked to the KKK as someone who has done pretty well for himself out in Hollywood (the Progressive Mecca) and is from Alabama I can tell you I've seen and heard more racist comments and innuendo than I ever did in the South and these were not coming from conservatives, but well to do liberals (some of which you would know from watching television or movies). I guess I might as well connect the left to the wild-eyed Che Guevara loving area 51 folks who where tin foil on their heads.

The only thing I can conclude is you may be one of those guys that want all us to be equal living in our Soviet style apartments.

I have an open mind Clinton- I’m still waiting for you to point out a country that adopted left wing economic policies that is a large diverse nation like ours and it was successful. As I mentioned California progressive attempts flopped, France has been in a world of hurt for a long time is turning to the right, and Germany has turned to the right. Those countries’ health care has gotten pretty bad and often people will fly to this country when they need the best care. We have to improve health care, but we can’t do it with the same government than can’t even run the post office!

"I have an open mind..." - Mark...

Uh, I don't think you do, as your economic "theory" is the same old (stuff) that conservatives have been trotting out FOR 30 YEARS! Yeah, you really got it together...

Listen, I don't know what works, and refuse to act like I do, of course I do know what doesn't work, CONSERVATIVE ECONOMIC THEORY. Isn't it obvious yet?

Blaming Clinton for Enron? Huh? Nobody is buying that B.S., "Kenny Boy" Lay strike a chord with you?

Again, you want me to refute you line by line? No, all I need to do is point at history, that is what America/Obama is looking at.

And while a laugh at the "wingnut" comments you guys make, I refer you to my earlier posts pointing out the psychological deficiencies of conservative minded people. Self-loathing, Denial, "Simple" opinions, the list goes on. When we find the answer to these mental inabilities, we will find a cure for conservativeness...

Clinton-at least thanks for your honestly in not being able to point to a successful progressive economic model (there have been a lot of them in the 20th century to choose from)

As far as Obama and his voter understanding history- would disagree, but I'm certain they are poised to repeat some history.

I will give you an example of a conservative economic model that worked (hold your breath!) the United States. This country was built from being governed between a center-right and right economic model that encourage the profit motive, creativity, maximizing recourse etc. There are other nations who may have more recourses such as oil, precious medal reserves etc. but none have been able to duplicate our creative success which gave us the likes of Henry Ford, Bill Gates and so on. We have become the wealthiest, freest, most inclusive country in the world when you consider our diversity. Could it be better- of course, but when you consider how minorities for example have done in our country compares to the "progressive nations" of Europe there is no comparison. Every one of our presidents would be considered to be right or center right on economic policy except perhaps Carter and unfortunately for us Obama.

This nation was built by very smart creative people in the business world not beard scratching, latte drinking liberals on the upper west side.

Listening to you two guys going back and forth about is comical. Bush and Obama are both pawns of the military industrial complex and are both about making the rich even richer. The war Bush started in the middle east ranks of imperailism only to be expanded by Obama by adding 40,000 more troops. Until we have a world free of right-wing domination the masses will continue to be made to suffer. It saddens me to see that europe and the u.s. are still in the grasp of these simpletons. Hugo Chavez had it right when he said the Angela Merkle is the political decendent of Hitler and Bush is the devil.

My hope is that one day justice will be brought to the entire world and no longer will we have borders that were arbitariy set up war lords.

My hope is that labor can freely move about the planet unimpedded as every human should be treated with dignity and the right to pursue happyness.

My hope is that private ownership is restricted to only family buisnesses and the corporations are turned over to the people instead of vehicles being only to en-rich the executives.

My hope is that education is made accessible to everyone and social barriers are removed.

My hope is that the world will heave fascism & imperialism into the ashheap of history.

My hope is that someday we realize that we are all children of the earth and realize that we evolved and must continue to work to perfect humanity. It will be a great day when we finally purge all religon from the earth through education but not violence.

A lot of you guys are squabbling over petty insignifigant stuff while humanity is still being subjucated. You have to open your eyes and open your hearts to all of those made to suffer. Peace on Earth!
