Much ado has been made about Miss USA runner-up Carrie Prejean's remarks about gay marriage. When asked onstage about her views on this very hot-button political topic, Miss Prejean of California spoke her truth: That people should be free to love whomever they choose, but that marriage is between a man and a woman.
Fair enough; there are many who would agree with her, just as there are many who would not.
In response, however, Miss USA judge and openly homosexual Perez Hilton called Prejean a "dumb bitch" and has been wailing about it for days. His blog has an image of Miss Prejean at the pageant and in place of the microphone that originally appeared in the image, Mr. Hilton has drawn in a penis near Prejean's mouth. Very classy.
As for the conservatives, there is a lot of hutesium et clamor over whether or not Prejean lost the crown over her remarks, and if her free speech has been impinged.
Miss Prejean has as much free speech as anyone else in America. She was asked for her opinion, and she gave it. Live on television. If asked again, she could say the same thing. She could sing it from the rooftops, provided she stop before 11pm, lest she cause a noise violation. No one is restricting her speech in any way.
The question of whether or not she lost the crown for her remarks isn't the same as the question of free speech. The Miss USA pageant is an enterprise, not a government body. They may choose whomever they wish. It is up to the judges to decide, on whatever arbitrary grounds they see fit to apply, who wears the Miss USA crown for a year. They don't like your hair? You lose. Cellulite? You lose. Religious faith? Obviously that's a deal breaker, too. Conservatives can be angry or disappointed, but they cannot claim that the First Amendment has been denied to Miss Prejean.
That said, the fact that the judges didn't choose Miss Prejean may be attributed in some part to the changing mores of the last 15 years or so. Political correctness has replaced religion from our schools to our courtrooms to our beauty pageants. One must not ever been seen to give offense, even if to do so is to offend one's self. And an argument can be made that the so-called "gay agenda" isn't so much about equality as it is about superiority. They're here, they're queer, and even if we're used to it we must continue to prostrate ourselves lest we cause hurt feelings. This means Miss Prejean's faith and mores are less valuable to American society as those of Mr. Hilton.

By Wendy's logic, no penalty short of being executed by the state is an abridgment of free speech. After all, either the penalty is not imposed by a government or, if it is, the person penalized is still <i>able</i> (though perhaps in a prison cell) to loudly shout out their opinion. Freedom of speech is about whether you are punished for the content of your speech, not about whether you are disabled from speaking.
The problem with Ms. California is not that she said what she said, but that she doesn't have an explanation for her opinion except that's what she "believes". Vague references to "traditional" marriages is not an argument against gay marriage, but a red herring distracting from the inherently bigoted anti-gay stance.
There was no breach of "freedom of speech" in this situation, that is a ploy of the far-right to inject anti-homosexual propoganda into the "unwashed masses".

I am a fiscal conservative, but I'm liberal on social issues and do not have a problem with gay marriage. This was stupid question that Mr. Hilton asked and the way he acted actually plays into the stereo type that a lot of us straight people might have of gays. After living in and working in Hollywood I can tell you that 99% of the homosexuals that I've met would never act like this. So Mr. Hilton has really undermined his cause with a lot of people, much in the same way Jesse Jackson started doing in 80's and 90's for civil rights by being more focused on himself than the people he claimed to represent.

With judges like Perez Hilton, the reputation of the Miss USA beauty pageant has been reduced to a farce and that is the fault of Donald Trump. Carrie Prejean had every right to answer the way she did. The liberal left just doesn't like it because she stated her opposing views on live TV that reached an audience of millions. Perhaps they fear that she may persuade the masses. They want to stifle any opinion that conflicts with their own.
Also, too many folks have been hammering her because of her spotty articulation. How would you like it if cameras were on you and judges staring in your face and the world is hanging on your every word? You'd be nervous as hell. She was extremely gracious under all that pressure and didn't hide behind neutral statements to avoid the question.
It would make more sense if Mr. Hilton is so upset to focus his anger at President Obama, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton who all share the same belief as this beauty contestant who has no or little influence. If this girl was clever she could have simply answered "I share the same beliefs as President Obama on this issue" that would have shut down most of the backlash as the "Messiah" would have been drawn into it.

They have the perfect right to speak but we have the perfect right not to want to hear their music anymore, which is not to say we are censoring them. Well, there is one little difference: Miss Prejean actually expresses a majority opinion. It just happens to be an opinion that the far left and the elite media is trying to criminalize.

What consequences would there be if a heterosexual male had described any female in public discourse in the terms the homosexual Hilton used? Would he be charged with hate crime? Lose his job? Be ostracized from society?
Why then is Hilton not on his way to social oblivion? Why is this acceptable from him?
If Perez Hilton and his ilk succeed in forcing society to redefine his lifestyle choice as marriage, how will society draw the line? When a mother and son declare intent to marry, when a commune in the Catskills decides that the ties that bind it rise to the level of marriage, when a man insists on marrying his cats, when a woman wants to marry three toy boys, what is society going to do to accommodate them?
What is society going to do to accommodate
the conventional male/female married couples who decide that if Hilton and his boyfriend are married then they are . . . something else, but not married, according to the definition of marriage enforced by the state?
Will the state charge those formerly-married-but-now-something-else couples with crimes? This sounds like a hate crime, doesn't it?
We are fast heading in that direction, aren't we, to a place where if you attend Tax Revolt Tea Parties you're no better than a Ku Klux Klan member; a place where political differences, ethical differences, and deeply held religious views in formerly mainstream Judeo-Christian religious traditions are being re-defined as hate crimes.
In that place, the formerly mainstream Judeo-Christian religious traditions will be attacked frontally by the state, won't they? If homosexual marriage becomes the law of the land, then an Orthodox rabbi or a Catholic priest who refuses to perform one is breaking the law, is he not?

This is exactly how "Perez Hilton" hoped to exploit Miss California with his question. He is mad because she would not play along. He therefore wanted to ruin her chances of becoming a celebrity.
Yeah "Ciaran", I agree, why do we have to respect queers? Isn't it my right to have hate in my heart towards people that didn't chose their position in life?
