There are some truly offensive things in this world. Flags are not among them.
That didn't stop a supervisor for Kindred Hospitals in Mansfield, Texas from taking down an American flag hanging in an office to celebrate Memorial Day in May 2009. The supervisor, who immigrated from Africa fourteen years ago, shared the office with other supervisors. One of those supervisors, Debbie McLucas, is a military veteran whose children all served in the armed forces, including a daughter currently serving in Iraq. In honor of the Memorial Day weekend, McLucas put up the flag. The African-born supervisor took the flag down when McLucas was off of work.
"The other supervisor took it down unknown to me because I wasn't at work that day, and it's when I returned to work last Friday that I was told it was taken down because it was offensive," McLucas said during an interview with local radio station KRLD, whose coverage of the event brought it to the public's attention.
Initially, the hospital supported the offended immigrant and kept the flag off the wall, until the story hit the local, and then national, media. The considerable outrage from the public who called Kindred Hospitals to complain and negative coverage from the media had an effect. Kindred Hospitals seemed to find their patriotic side. The hospital apologized and invited McLucas to put the flag back up.
One wonders why there wasn't some sort of effort made by Kindred Hospitals to ensure this doesn't happen again. Why wasn't the supervisor who took down the flag made to apologize? Why wasn't there "sensitivity training" to make sure military families are not discriminated against? Perhaps Kindred Hospitals should have their head checked.

Of course, no one involved cares to find out WHY the African immigrant found the flag display offensive. That's of course irrelevant. Who cares if American soldiers might have happened to kill his family members or helped prop up a brutal regime in his home country; and heaven forbid he should proudly display his own home country's national flag on THEIR national holidays.
Were there no other flag displays on Memorial Day? Did this one immigrant's action ruin Memorial Day for everyone? It's strange, my workplace didn't have any flags in evidence for Memorial Day. Were we alone in our disrespectful ignoring of this important holiday tradition? Are we therefore not "real Americans?"
Feh. This is just another excuse to wrap yourselves in the flag and bash on immigrants. Something I would have thought someone named "Victor Medina" might have thought twice about doing.
