Chicago to install 400 solar powered trash compactors

The City of Chicago announced that they will be improving the way trash is collected throughout downtown with the help of solar powered trash compactors.

$2.5 million in Federal funding will be utilized to purchase the 400 trash compactors from Massachusetts-based Big Belly Solar.

Chicago has adopted this program based on results the city of Philadelphia experienced just over a year after they installed 500 solar powered trash compactors.  Philly reduced trash pickup from 17 times per week with 700 of their old trash bins, to 5 times per week using the new solar powered compactors.

Although there isn't data available related to how much CO2 and other green houses gases were eliminated via this program, one can assume garbage trucks emissions have been reduced.
