Last week, we looked at activities for learning about Lekh L'kha. This week we will look at Vayera, an action-packed scripture portion. Avraham (Abraham) meets some heavenly visitors who tell him that Sarah will have a child, S'dom and 'Amora are destroyed, Sarah is introduced to Avimeleck as Abraham's sister, Hagar and Ishmael are sent out into the desert and God tests Abraham with the binding of Isaac. See the photo album at the bottom of the page to find out how to make a cardboard tube craft to go along with this story.
- Read the story for yourself in Genesis 18-22. A simplified version of the text for children can be found at Akhlah.
- It often helps children pay attention when their hands are occupied with a task such as coloring. Allow children to color as you read them the story. Download free, printable coloring pages of Ishmael and Hagar, Abraham asking God to spare the righteous, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and the binding of Isaac.
- Explore the story through crafting. Make cardboard tube characters by following the instructions in the photo album at the bottom of the page. Read the story again, this time having your child act out the story with the craft tubes. Next, see if the child can tell the story himself.
Look for more crafts to go along with Vayera later this week. Subscribe to these articles by email or in a reader for more free lesson ideas.
