Actress Natasha Richardson died today after suffering a head injury from a seemingly minor fall during a ski lesson. The actress was moved in a private plane yesterday from a Canadian hospital to her home town of NY. Her husband actor Liam Neeson and mother actress Vanessa Redgrave were at her side today. Other family members and friends have been visiting and possibly saying their goodbyes.
The family issued this statement:
"Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time."
Head injuries may appear to be minor, but fatal damage can occur even when the blow does not seem to be severe. The skull has bony protrusions which can cause tears if the brain ricochets inside the skull. Also where in the skull the impact occurs may be enough to cause bleeding that cannot be stopped even when surgery is an option.
Sudden death is difficult for families and the helplessness that her husband, children, family and friends are experiencing can cause of sense of hopelessness.
