Corey, Rick, & Richard/History Channel
What do you think of when you hear the word pawnshop? I think of a dark, dusty, shop owned by a seedy individual in a less than desirable neighborhood where people go to exchange some valuable item because they're hard up for cash. Well, my impression has completely changed after watching a few episodes of the History Channel's Pawn Stars and talking with one its stars, Rick Harrison.
What is Pawn Stars you ask? It is a phenomenal show entering its second season on the History Channel. The show gives you a firsthand look at the never before exposed history and day-to-day workings of the pawning industry as it takes viewers inside the doors of the Gold & Silver Pawnshop in Las Vegas, NV. Gold & Silver is the only family-run pawnshop in Las Vegas and it is run by Richard Harrison (Grandfather), Rick Harrison (Son) and Corey Harrison (Grandson). I had the opportunity to interview Rick Harrison and here's what he had to say.
I've always been told that mixing family and business is a bad idea. What is it like working with family?
It's the best part of the job and the worst part of the job, but I've been doing it for a long time. I started working with my father when I was 12 years old. I love it.
How did you get started in the pawning industry?
My father opened a secondhand shop in 1981, but he wanted to open a pawnshop. Las Vegas had a law stating that no new pawnshops could be opened until the population reached a certain number. So, I started calling every year to check the population and finally, when I was 22, the population was right and we got a license.
What is the most expensive thing you've ever sold?
A few months ago we sold some gold bricks for $128,000.
Have you ever kept anything for yourself?
There are always a few things. I have some really cool old clocks and an autographed picture of Mary Pickford.
Why do you film the show and what do you want people to know about it?
I film the show because I'm really a huge history buff and I love teaching people different things. The show is fun and it appeals to people from all different demographics. You'll get to see some really cool stuff and learn at the same time.

I just met all 4 of them in Anderson,Indiana. They are a rude bunch. Chumlee is a slobby, dirty looking goof. I have a pristine Civil War Tactical Field Manual.....Rick the prick offered me $40 for it. They were an hour and a half late getting to the place......they aren't that big of stars to keep people waiting for so long. I wouldn't go see them again if they were across the street from my house!!

I've been a straight man all my life, but that fabulous bald man in the middle sure is making me question that. I love his hair, or for that matter, lack of. And don't get me started on his gorgeous laugh. Anyways Rick, if you end up moving on from your wife, just rememeber I'm here for ya! ;)

I like the show - But...the guys are too fake with the knowledge of somethings and the wisecracks, give the customer some f-n credit, and that they brought it to you...these are not just things to these people.
