Greg Garver reported some startling news on his Triple Net Lease Blog about a South Beach bowling alley that developers are rolling into the outgoing Borders Books space underneath the Beacon Condominiums. As if The Beacon wasn't already going through enough changes with all the wild short sales and foreclosures happening there (BTW, Beacon condos are a great deal-- and cheaper than renting if you have the scratch for the downpayment. Call me if you want more info).
In a way I can understand Borders Books' exit. The neighborhood probably has one of the highest ratios of iPad/Residents in the City. But still. . . a bowling alley?
Called "Lucky Strike" this alley is related to the Lucky Strike Lanes in Los Angeles. If the LA venue is any indication, this is not your dad's bowling alley. Instead, we are going 'uptown,' with evening hours, a dress code, two bars and a restaurant.
Oh yeah, and bowling lane rentals will be $60-80 per lane. And cocktails are $12! And there's a bouncer! And a revolving door!
If I wanted to impress my date, I think I'd head for Gary Danko. At the end of the night, it would cost just about as much.
If, however, I'm a conventioneer from Des Moines who wants to tell my buddies about the cool things I did with my new friends, this might be right up my alley (sorry).
For Beacon buyers and owners worried about the clattering of king pins, sound engineers will 'work to minimize the amount of noise both in and around the location.' How a sound engineer can minimize the noise around a location mystifies me. . . but who am I to judge?
Greg predicts a two-year lifespan for a Bowlounge (is there really such a word?) at 3rd and King. I don't recommend wagering against him. . .
