Mount Vernon confirms Beck's key to the city

Glenn Beck

The mayor of Mount Vernon, Washington has confirmed that controversial conservative radio and TV host Glenn Beck will be honored with the key to the city on September 26.

It will be the first key to the city awarded by Mayor Bud Norris in his six years in the office. Beck, a Mount Vernon native, will be in the area to be the keynote speaker at a fundraiser for the Evergreen Freedom Foundation at Safeco Field.

Norris told KOMO News the honor recognizes a local boy who made it big and isn’t meant to endorse Beck’s political positions.

Norris recalled a 12-year-old Beck wearing a sandwich board in support for Norris’s campaign for county commissioner, though he added the key shouldn’t be seen as political payback.

The mayor intends to award the key despite protests Monday by a few dozen people at Mount Vernon’s city hall. The group, led by Young Democrats of Skagit County, wanted to demonstrate that the mayor’s decision isn’t supported by at least some Mount Vernon residents. One sign encouraged the city to change its locks.

The mayor’s administrative assistant, Kerri Grechischkin, said city funds would not be spent on the ceremony honoring Beck.

Beck lost dozens of sponsors of his Fox News Channel show in the wake of comments made in late July on the “Fox and Friends” morning show. Beck labeled President Obama a racist and said the president has "a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture."

Beck’s syndicated radio show is carried in Seattle weekday mornings, 6 to 9, by Bonneville’s KTTH, 770 “The Truth.”

I have figured out why Mount Vernon has decided to give Glenn Beck the key to their city. They want to attract new citizens, retirees.. good citizens with jobs and money and brains... people that are well behaved and not liberal taggers and gang bangers and welfare suckers and illegal aliens.. etc.

I have been looking for a place to retire in a few years, and a city that would give the key to a great American like Glenn Beck and not a racist like Hussein Obama might be a good and clean place to get away from rap and the crap that you liberals lieak all over the place..

    NOBAMA!

The characterization of liberals as "gang bangers, welfare suckers, and illegal aliens..etc." is both a gross mischaracterization, and a clear indictment of your stunted educational development, dear Rob. Turn off the TV, take a music appreciation class, and get a life.

Nice story, Mike. It's good to see a story about a "local boy that does good".

It's time we celebrate individuals that make a positive effect in their community and our country.

Rob, Mount Vernon is my home and it is a good place to live. Many hardworking farmers like myself, small business owners, families and retirees. All good, honest citizens. We'd like to keep it that way, so try to find another place to settle, okay?

I can't figure out what's wrong with giving him a key to the city: he has the third most watched show in all of tv (sounds like him, huh?) that's quite an accomplishment. Who cares if you don't agree with him? That's not the point. It's ridiculous that EVERYONE should have to agree with him to be honored- wow. Sure hope protesters don't get the same treatment if they want the key given to some lib...? But really, do we want to get into stupid games like tit-for-tat? There are already schools named after BO- I don't like it, but so what.

Shoot.....Rob sounds like he'd make a GREAT neighbor! A lot better than the one's I have right now, for sure!

Matt, you are welcome to invite Rob to settle in Renton. Don't be surprised if your new neighbor expresses disagreement by calling you names. And it is not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing with him, at least for me. The man is successful at making a fool of himself, and just because a lot of people like to listen to him do it doesn't make him less of a fool. I support his right to make a fool of himself, but he's no credit to the people of Mount Vernon.

Put him (Beck) in a round room covered with mirrors and watch him wear himself out...

Yes, I am what some of you might call a liberal.
