When you hear the words "cover letter" you likely immediately think of a job advertisement. I challenge you think about cover letters in a completely different way. For example, you can use a cover letter to:
- Introduce yourself to a high-profile professional in your industry. This is a smart strategy for those interested aligning themselves with people that have acheived some of the same goals they have.
- Invite someone to a presentation / workshop / demonstration / film screening / art show / etc. you are hosting that they might find interesting or helpful.
- Create awareness around a cause that you are involved in that another professional might also find important.
- Introduce someone in your network to another professional that would benefit from the new relationship.
The list goes on and on. Once you get in the habit of writing to others, it will become easier to write those traditional job-based cover letters.
Good luck in your search! I welcome your job search questions; please email me (a cover letter perhaps!) at kimberly@citycareerservices.com.
