Resume myths you can retire: the one-page 'rule'

Not a day goes by when my Inbox doesn't contain a resume written by a skilled professional with many years of experience--and who is apparently convinced that it MUST be jammed onto a single page.

What most job hunters don't realize is that this "rule" originated from the days of typewriters, when creating a single-page document was all one could muster without White-Out (remember that?).

Also, resumes used to be simply basic career chronologies that listed From and To dates, with a few phrases that showed responsibilities.

Fast forward to the hyperactive, warp-speed job hunting environment of today, and you'll find that marketing and personal branding have taken center stage as the MAIN purpose of your resume.

It's become downright impossible to convey this message on a single page, with a few minor exceptions (8 years of experience is usually the point at which a resume needs a second page).

Recruiters and hiring managers appreciate clearly laid out resumes that tell them precisely how you're going to add value to their company. Therefore, your resume may span 2 or even 3 pages.

The idea is to create a document that is easy on the eyes, while capturing your value proposition--NOT to follow a dated "rule" that doesn't apply to YOUR credentials and professional brand!
