With the start of another year, many jobseekers are hopeful that 2010 will ring in new job opportunities after a dismal year of unprecedented unemployment rates. To aide in their search efforts, many unemployed hopefuls are taking the advice of industry specialists and enlisting the services of resume writers in order to give their resumes a vital face-lift and increase their odds of standing apart from a mounting number of unemployed workers.

So, where should weary jobseekers in search of a certified resume writer turn? The answer may begin with the National Resume Writers Association. Founded in 1996, the National Resume Writers Association (or NRWA) was the inspiration of 11 volunteers on the East coast whose vision was to create an organization dedicated to providing “educational support, networking opportunities, training, mentoring and certification” for its members.

According to Past President, Robyn Feldberg (2008-2009), certification as a Nationally Certified Resume Writer has many advantages such as “establishing oneself as an expert in the field, gaining increased confidence” and increasing one’s business value through “external validation.”

The process for becoming a certified resume writer through NRWA requires several steps including membership with NRWA (for a cost of about $150/year), submission of a sample resume/cover letter for review by certification staff, the accumulation of ten continuing education units and the successful passing of an NRWA certification exam.

Upon fulfillment of all program requirements, graduates become Nationally Certified Resume Writers which carries with it benefits for both jobseekers and the newly certified member as well. For jobseekers interested in increasing their employment value, the assistance provided by an NRWA resume writer can help the jobseeker discover “[his or her] unique value proposition,” which, according to Feldberg, “is a skill that NRWA resume writers [are uniquely qualified] to do.” For the newly certified NRWA member, the benefits amount to increased exposure, credibility in the field and access to the organization’s vast industry resources.
