Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival 2009

The Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival 2009 held at the Tokyo Dome is going on right now. The show is billed as a celebration of fabric, needles, and thread. The main contest is the Japan Quilt Grand Prix which features 330 prize winning quilts.

The show has many special features and exhibits including the following:

A special exhibit of quilts inspired by Anne of Green Gables. The book is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year with a special exhibit which showcases a reproduction of 'Green Gables', Anne's house and 'Avonlea Village' from the book. Reiko Washizawa and her friends create quilts that demonstrate their love for the story.

An exhibit of American antique and Amish quilts. Quilts from the Geneva Museums of Art and History and from Monika Willi's private collection in Zürich, Switzerland, from where the Amish originally came will be on display.

Three American Masters: In this special exhibition, Robert Show, a prominent American quilt researcher brings together works by three contemporary American master quiltmakers, Kate Adams, M. Joan Lintault, and Susan Shie.

The show runs from Friday, January 16  to  Saturday, January 24, 2009.

The show opens at 10:00 a.m. closes at 6:30 p.m. On the first day, it opens at 11:00 a.m. and closes at 6:00 p.m. on final day. Admission ends one hour prior to closing.

You can find accomodations online. A single room costs about $217USD. If you share a room with two others, it will cost about $127USD. Admission at the show is 2000 yen - about $21USD.

    No problem! I hope I get to go someday. It sounds wonderful.

    I've seen Anne's house (I grew up in New Brunswick so we vacationed on Prince Edward Island a few times.) I love her story too.
