The Alliance for American Quilts (AAQ) has announced the winners of its fourth annual contest "New from Old".

The contest challenged quilters to create a new quilt from something old – old fabric, an old UFO, whatever their notion of 'old' was. Each quilt had to measure 16 by 16 inches. Winners were chosen by a vote of AAQ members.

This years contest received 117 entries, which is a 37% increase over last year's contest.

AAQ president Meg Cox said the rise in entries was due to

greater awareness of this fine organization, along with some truly outstanding prizes. I personally know quite a few quilters who got serious about this contest because they wanted to win the grand prize of Handi Quilter's HQ Sixteen Sit-down, a version of their popular mid-arm quilting machine designed for those who prefer moving the quilt under the needle when quilting."

Prize winners

Jamie Fingal of California was the Grand Prize winner. She took home the HQ Sixteen Sit-down quilting machine. Her winning quilt, "Metal Measures" used vintage zippers to create a log cabin design. You can see more of Jamie's work at her website.

First prize went to Michael Michalski for his quilt "A Tale of Four One-Patches". He received a mega gift basket which included items from Moda Fabrics, EZ Quilting, Simplicity Creative Group, Quilters Club of America, June Tailor, Quilting Arts, and Fons & Porter.

Second prize went to Dana Lynch for her intricately machine-quilted piece "Heavenly Swirls". She received a prize package from The Electric Quilt Company which includes EQ7 software, three EQ7 companion books, and two STASH fabric CDs.
