Today's guest author interview is with Charles Franklin Emery III, author of the pet memoir, A Man and His Maniac: The Bunkie Story. Charles is here with us today to tell us all about his writing life. You can visit www.bunkiedog.com to find out more about this talented author. Stay tuned for my review of his book next week (hint: it's fantastic!).
Thank you for this interview, Charles. Can you tell us a little about yourself and how long you’ve been writing?
I'm a Consulting Engineer to the nuclear utility industry with an emphasis in Relaying and Controls. I'm 53 years old and sometimes I feel like I'm 18 or 118. I've been writing for the past few years now that I have the time. Very little, but some time.
Do you write full-time?
Nope, I have a day job, got to pay the bills.
You’ve met an old friend from high school and you want to pitch your book to him/her in five minutes or less. What would you say?
For a Him: Buy my book or I'll kick your butt the way I used to do it in High School and I'll tell your Dad that it was you who stole his scotch after the Homecoming game. For a her: You should buy my book, when you read it, it will take 30 years off your age and get you a date with Viggo Mortenson.
Who is your intended audience? Have you been able to crossover into other audiences as well?
Teenagers and up who love dogs or animals in general. A Man and His Maniac: The Bunkie Story is good for anyone who has a heart, especially those who love the outdoors and are dog lovers.
Why did you choose your particular genre?
It picked me. I had a need to honor Bunkie and this was the only way that I could do it, other than renting the Goodyear blimp or a Times Square advertising screen. The book also is good for those who have lost a treasured friend, it lets them know that they are not alone and it's OK to grieve. Hell, I'm still grieving and it's been almost 15 years since Bunkie passed on.
Do you ever experience self-doubts with your work?
Nope. I'm a hack and I know it.
Where do you write? Do you have a favorite place?
I write in my garage, quiet out there, aside from the Boston Terrier Horde making unannounced and rather raucous appearances.
What kind of research did you have to do during the writing process?
These are memoirs, so I look at pictures to spur the old brain and write from the mind and heart.
Who is your publisher and how did you get accepted by them? Did you pitch your book yourself or go through an agent?
Not applicable in this case, as I publish through my own imprint and retain all rights as well as the headaches. No, I have never had an agent. At this point in my life I don't see me ever using one but never say never.
How are you promoting your book thus far?
PUMP UP YOUR BOOK PROMOTION VIRTUAL BOOK TOURS is what I'm doing and judging by the support thus far, I'll be doing it again for existing and subsequent works.
If you could give one book promotion tip to new authors, what would that be?
Get a professional to help you promote your book, it's a necessary expense.
What’s next for you?
Getting my new books done and out there. I'm currently working on the memoirs Moondoggie and the Boston Terrier Horde, Gearhead and Bubblehead.
