Melissa Burmester is your typical teenager. She lives in
But Melissa has accomplished something not too many teenagers her age have managed to achieve. She has written and self-published a book and at the ripe old age of fifteen is out there promoting the book just like someone twice her age.
Melissa’s forte is vampires. She’s been writing about vampires and the supernatural since she was twelve and although she’s written a few short stories, Ginger High is her first novel which was published at the age of fourteen.
“I never thought it was possible,” she says. “I was rejected by so many agents and publishers but I persisted. My self-esteem has increased and I feel wonderful. With the help of my family, I can continue my dream to write a bestseller one day. Since I plan to be a writer and a teacher, this is a good start to my career.”
So what do her peers think about having an author as a classmate?
“I was fourteen when I got the book published,” she says. “Everyone was impressed and thrilled. All of the reviews that I had received mentioned that I was in high school, and they said it was a great accomplishment.
“Always write what you want and not what other people tell you to write. If they have an idea themselves, they should write it themselves and not give it to someone else. You never know, it could be a bestseller.”
